The problem is that even in the middle guys take one slant or the other
For example, Malik is in the "take it seriously" crowd (I probably am too) and Darth and Scruffy are the "pretty overblown" crowd even though all of them are relatively civil and not saying objectively false things
Let's call a spade a spade here. The far right and the far left are both in the wrong for politicizing this thing so heavily. It's a potentially very serious issue if completely ignored and a costly overblown narrative if overly cautious.
I've been pleased to see the upvote/downvote counts skew more towards, "can we actually just be on the same goddamn team here? We're all fricking Americans." But there will be that 15% on either side that have to bicker politically because it's what we do in this country now.
Sorry, if you're (not you to whom I'm replying) not at least in "cautious" mode, you're just being an idiot and endangering those around you for being hard headed. If you're in the "doom and gloom 50% infection" crowd, you're spreading negativity and anxiety and stress needlessly.
We all just need to do our best, overly take care of our hygiene just to be safe, and be selfless/think of others around us/stay positive. At the end of the day, there's not much else anyone can do. At least this thing is temporarily putting a bandaid on the hatred being spewed around the country by both sides.

No.
They aren’t even the same phylum.
Both are viruses, but it would be like comparing a human and a salamander, probably even more different.
Yes, they are both animals, but are significantly different.
They aren’t even on the same evolutionary pathway.
Thanks, this was the starting point I had but so many people are referring to it as a flu that I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
But then, "stomach flu" is a thing so I'm guessing there is a widespread usage that has no real connection to influenza.

Not really. Death totals are death totals, does not matter what it is biologically.

I agree with all of this
I think it's harder to do a "we're all in this together" pitch in 2020, unfortunately. A lot of us hate each other and have nothing in common. We look different, we believe differently, we don't share the same foundational ideas, etc.
The whole "we have more in common..." pitch is kind of true for the middle of the country, but the fringes are growing larger and louder, and it makes it harder to see that.

Aren’t SARS and MERS coronaviruses?
I'm pretty sure the "real" name for COVID19 is actually SARS-COV-2.

That isn’t an influenza bug.

Just saw my first religious battle thread, though I may have missed some if they popped up earlier.
Now it definitely kicking into high gear.

I’m not sure about everywhere else but Austin set up a drive thru testing option yesterday

This we can agree on. And for those of us who are somewhere in between with a growing business, this could determine which category we end up in.

New Orleans is supposed to be one of the pilot cities for this but of course nothing is up yet

It’s either the flu or it’s everyone is in a panic.
Honestly, I think what causes the panic is that we haven’t heard any testimonials from people who have had mild cases most likely because they didn’t even know. The only people who have shared what this is like are those that share death statistics and bad, critical care cases.
In fact, I just saw one on Twitter where this one guy said his wife is 30 and in really good health (no underlying health conditions and healthy weight) and has been having to carry his wife out of bed to the bathroom because of fatigue and body aches and she can’t even form a sentence because of shortness of breath. Happened in a matter of days. Went from a mild cough and sneezing to a couple days of no symptoms to now this and I’m sure there are many others with cases like this and in older people or those in poor health, this is what’s landing people in ICU
But because we only hear of these through regular people AND media, it stirs the pot and makes people think the severe cases are very very prevalent

Yeah, SARS-COV-2 is the virus that causes Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The naming convention is weird.

Exactly what I have been thinking.
Where are all the anecdotes of something like, “I have it. I got tested because I was in contact with someone who tested positive. I have some symptoms, but they are pretty mild. Just a little tired. Feel better today.”
If 80% of cases are like this, where are these testimonials?

Tell me what is a useable bit of information in this thread. What purpose does it serve?
It lets people know the truth of what we are facing. So when someone tells them it’s just the flu they know better.
And when we get instructions from local or national government people actually listen, instead of thinking this is all a conspiracy theory. So hopefully when the city says don’t congregate in large groups they don’t go out and form a parade for St. Patrick’s day.

The lack of sensationalism in “I feel fine” means it won’t be circulated by anyone.

Which truth? This thread is all over the place.

Denver has been doing drive thru testing since last week.

Because that isn't the protocol for testing.

More people will be hurt by the over-reaction and economic downturn, than will get Corona.
The economic downturn can’t be untangled from corona not matter what the public’s reaction is. If we go about business as usual the system will be overwhelmed throwing us into even more chaos then we have now and eventually forcing us to do what we are doing now.
