Oh course I want that to be true. But it doesn’t cloud my judgement as to what is really happening.

It kills the same way the flu kills, acute respiratory distress syndrome. The lungs basically fill with fluid. So if the flu kills in Asia and the United States. Why wouldnt this be able to as well?

Our best hope is to contain it like SARS

South Korea reported 15 new cases just now. In one a woman infected 10 people at her place of worship and another at hospital.

Do you think other countries have what it takes to implement the quarantines necessary to control this thing? China can get away with a lot implementing their communism

No Western/democratic country will be able to enforce the mass isolation that China has implemented. I've been wrong before but I just don't see it.

The quarantines were never grounded in any kind of scientific reasoning.

Even in the best of conditions, China has a severe shortage of doctors, nurses, and medical facilities. The quarantine is just a convenient excuse to control the party narrative around the disease and stifle dissent.

Other countries will be able to deploy a much more robust response to the coronavirus, and it will be grounded in science, not bureaucratic and political nonsense.

A second person, a 70-year-old man, has died in Hong Kong from the infection, a spokeswoman at the Princess Margaret Hospital told CNBC. When asked for more information about the patient, the spokeswoman said further details would be shared at an afternoon press conference. This would mark the sixth fatality outside the Chinese mainland, where the death toll has surpassed 2,000

Still only impacting a certain group outside of mainland... Waiting for the shoe to drop.

What kinds of actions would a university or other place where there are a lot of people around take if a student/employee tested positive for this?

Honest question:

how exactly will this thing subside?

How did previous pandemics like plague, spanish flu, etc subside?

There has to be something, either manmade or natural, that can slow this thing down.

Several things can happen, some natural and some not.

Kind of obviously I think, as things spread and reality hits, people become more aware and cautious about things. Just simple things like not getting too close to people and washing hands can have a huge impact.

There are several natural ways pandemics slow down, as well. UV light kills a lot of stuff, so they tend to slow in the summer. Also, since mutations are random, the more deadly forms generally don't tend to stick around as long as the less deadly ones. That's why the common cold is so common - it's not all that deadly. Obviously a virus could be extremely deadly but also take a long time to kill, and that would be worst-case scenario. But thankfully when something is that deadly it usually doesn't take its sweet time in killing.

South Korea, Japan and Singapore will be the real test on what this will be in the West. It will take another month to know what kind of fatalities we will see from the current crop of cases. If it spreads and produces fatalities anything like China it will be a real global concern. Hopefully that isn’t the case.

Fascinating NYT article on how much CCP is holding back efforts to get basic supplies to the frontline...

LINK

quote:

Supplies are close — and yet frustratingly out of reach. Medical supplies donated to the Red Cross Society of China’s Wuhan branch sit in warehouses. Individuals who try to organize relief supplies face violating the country’s strict charity law. Beijing has shown the world that it can shut down entire cities, build a hospital in 10 days and keep 1.4 billion people at home for weeks. But it has also shown a glaring weakness that imperils lives and threatens efforts to contain the outbreak: It is unable to work with its own people.

Many assume the CCP’s ability to exercise complete authority to be a good thing in fighting the disease. It looks like it invites critical corruption and dysfunction.

HK up to 65 now and they have identified 31 new potential cases.

ETA: Amazingly, 8 Chinese provinces reported no new cases, just in time to get people back to work.

Just saw on Facebook where Shelby county Tennessee health department is monitoring 20 people for possible Corona virus. Actually the wife sent me the link. I can post the link if interested. It may be bullshite but I think a news agency reported it. If so then there is more info available other than Facebook with the information.

Eta: that when I tried to open the link in order to copy the url the page no longer exists or as been removed. I will say that the story was bullshite unless I see some other source report it.

They are just residents of Shelby Co that travelled to China.

quote:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Twenty people in Shelby County are being monitored by the health department in the fight against coronavirus. While there are no confirmed cases of the illness in Tennessee, Mississippi or Arkansas, health officials are upping their prevention protocols to keep the virus from reaching the Mid-South.

Well, we are all dead now.

fricking stupid.

quote:

“Most people at the current time are being monitored locally and those are individuals who will stay in their home,” said Dr. Haushalter.

quote:

“If they develop any of the signs and symptoms, which are really cold-like or flu-like symptoms cough those kind of things, they should contact their health care provider immediately,” she said.

Yeah, I'm going to trust some idiot from Memphis to self-quarantine and not come into contact with another soul during the 24 day incubation period.
