Is it legal to own a kangaroo?

Guy I know just bought his 12 year old daughter a got damn kangaroo. For what? I have not the slightest clue but I’m seeing it on Facebook.
Now this guy is not exactly the most mentally stable person in the world. His daughter lives with his parents and he goes back and forth to west Texas for months on end. No one is accusing him of being the sharpest tool in the shed.
But can you actually legally own a kangaroo ?

A kangaroo is not an animal I’d just own as a pet. They’re cool as hell but they will tear you apart.
