I have no clue why Clemson thought they could guard our WR's 1 v 1 without safety help. Struck me as strange.

There was simply no good option for stopping our 2019 offense. Any possible defense was going to be damned if they do damned if they don't, no matter the choice.

I'm assuming they thought that the pressure they would bring would cause those long routes to be irrelevant.

What they failed to realize was Joe was seriously an NFL QB playing in college.

Because they were used to ACC competition.

With Chase and Marshall. Plus Gilbert and Palmer and Bouttee. No defense is going to be able to,handle LSU offense in 2020.

What are the other options? Send more guys into coverage? They played it the best way possible to me. Hands on man in press coverage and send exotic looks to try and get home.

In their defense- AJ Terrell was suppose to be a first round talent that dominanted vs Alabama last year. Fact of the matter is that no one was gonna stop us.

No one. I liked their approach but if Chase doesn’t drop that pass in the 3rd and we don’t take a knee we still hang 56 on them.

Without an NFL dline and nfl corners no one was going to stop us

Venables lives and dies by that. It worked 29 straight times.

Venables has said that 81 and 22 were problems. I think he knew that doubling was out. We had 5 elite pass catchers. BV knew that.

And if they dropped safeties, we’d be sitting here saying:

I mean they can’t play with more than 11 on defense so that’s hard to do

Clemson did not think that. It's just that they knew if they dropped safeties back to help, Burrow would chew them up with 15 and 20 yard gains. They picked their poison, and I think they chose wisely. By playing it the way that they did, they only needed three or four plays to misfire, and they would have had a ball game.

They truly believed they could match up their best corners on our guys.

This reminds me of that Oklahoma sports writer who wrote after our 63-28 win over the Sooners, "I thought before the game Oklahoma's defense would be able to keep the game close but what I didn't know was LSU has three NFL-ready wide receivers, one NFL-ready tight end and a cyborg at quarterback throwing the ball to them."

Clemson knew they had little chance of stopping us, and they decided this was the best method to try. I like it, believe in your guys to make a play. The extra men in the middle of the field took away our mid field passes and allowed for more guys to blitz from unmarked positions. The extra blitzing led to more bad throws. If their corners could have kept up with our WRs, that scheme would have been very effective. And it worked for the first quarter. But, eventually it became clear that their CBs were outmatched and their plan was exploited.
