I was not really looking for a boat, but happened to stumble upon what I think to be a good deal. A chance to upgrade from my 18' flats boat to a 21' Frontier for a few thousand difference. For me, it would expand my limitations on where I can fish.

My only concern is the engine has a little over 700 hours on it. It is a 2008. Boat and engine look well maintained. I will of course get it checked, but want to know if there's anything to worry about prior to that.

My current setup is a 150hp with less than 180 hrs. It runs like a top. The guy I bought it from used it lightly for bass fishing and never ran far.

Do you think there is any concern with that amount of hours? I'm willing to upgrade, but I also know what I have with my current set up. It's rock solid.

I'll hang up and listen.

Price? Location? Who are you using for engine diagnostics?
Wouldn’t be concerned with hours IF the review checks out. Those boats had a problem with water on the deck but that’s a minor inconvenience if you are getting a deal. Would use David Wade if close to BR, my guy would be second or first depending on boat location.
Motor/boat combo should push to high fifties with right prop. Can’t beat that power plant either.
Decarb ASAP

Boat is close to Metro boating so I’ll probably just bring there. They actually serviced it it’s entire life and said it’s been take care of.

I plan on keeping the boat another 5-7 years minimum, putting another 100-150 hrs a year. Like I mentioned before, current boat is pretty bullet proof. Not looking to jump into a possible headache if those engines give trouble with that amount of hours. I just do not know enough about them.

Good fuel, oil (opti blend), iridium plugs every 100hrs. Not hard to work on, get a Manuel, aftermarket parts are easier to find now.

How important is this?

Extremely for an OptiMax. You need OptiMax Oil for DFI Oil made by Quicksilver. Same thing.

A MUST! OP, that is a lot of hours on that motor. Yes, there is a chance you could get another 100 or so hours, but after running optimaxes, I wouldn't buy that boat unless they come off the price big time to reflect the price of repowering the boat.

700 hours is considered relatively low hours for that engine.
You should be able to put 1500-2000 hours on that outboard.
Just make sure to only run non-ethanol gas and only use Mercury Optimax 2-cycle oil.
You’ll be fine

At one time I ran what was cheapest because opti erl was $45/gal. Found it for $31/$37 gallon and suck up increase for piece of mind. It isn’t made by QS but has their flavorings.
Agree, motor could have another 1,000-1,5000 or more hours on clock. Have it decarbed by metro as part of sale.

No that is not a lot of hours and you won't have to repower soon if the engine was maintained.

I have 1400 on my Opti 225.

I had a friend in LC w a Frontier w a 200 Opti....great boat! I had one with a 150 Yammy but sold it because it was under powered.

the engine is fine, my issue is the 2008 frontiers had the half cap hull and have issues with water on the floor. they are self bailing which is why this occurs.

on the 2012 I believe and up they made a full liner boat with the sump floor pump like my frontier. the water comes in and goes into the floor sump and pumps out. they are great hulls and I love my boat, im currently shopping for a 24' bay now.

Self-bailing is a bitch to get right on a small boat. I wouldnt let that stop me though, just plug the deck drains and pull the plug when running if the shite is getting nasty. Typically they work fine with the boat empty at the dock for washing out and stuff.

Biggest thing I'm aware of about Opti's are the compressors. Ask if it has been changed as there have been several go out in the 500-600 hour range on bass boats. Don't know if the same applies to yall's king of boats but would be worth looking at I think. I think they are around 1500.00 to replace.

this by itself should not be a concern. Optimax are good motors and will go for wayyy longer than 700 hrs..just use the right oil, plugs, good non-e gas and service it

Motor should be good for a while. Also, you have to fish every weekend to put 100 hrs on a boat fishing inshore. Most put around 50 a year.

1) you can after market add the sump pump

2) you can lower the hole to the floor (as it sits the drain hole is about 3/4 inch above the floor, which sucks for letting the water out). This is what I did in my Frontier.

#2 was the cheaper option and what I did in my Frontier. It worked much better than before.

Looks like current owner has put 58 hours per year on avg so you’re spot on. I have 235 he’s on mine and put in service middle of oct 2018 but that’s rec/guide application also.
Make sure you have or install a fuel/water separator with the clear bowl. Makes checking and draining much easier than the solid elements.

Thanks to everyone for the help! I ended up buying the boat after everything checked out at the mechanic. All I need now is an OB koozie to be more Outdoor Board official.
