Pick a color that goes with the paint on the house and not clash. The lighter the color, the more it tends to reflect heat. A light colored roof will absorb less heat than a dark colored shingle. Black are the worst.

I prefer a shingle about mid range in color. Light colors show mold more easily, so I tend to go with a mottled color and not some solid color.

Tamko has the best warranty and most custom builders use them exclusively. If you’re in LA. Certainties makes a max def arch shingle that I believe is hurricane rated, a little pricier, but well worth it and my preferred shingle.

The 2 most popular colors are black and some form of weathered wood. That's a light brown and is called a little different name from company to company. I think Atlas calls it Weathered Shadow.
I prefer Atlas over Tamko. I'm a fan of Atlas and Certainteed. Certainteed is usually a little harder to get and not as widely stocked. Atlas has a great warranty if you use their system that has the lifetime warranty (you have to match the shingle with the starters and hip/ridge). They also have the series with the added copper that does very well against staining.

Used to sell both a few years back in grad school.

Tamko Heritage and Atlas Pinnacle were really the only 2 we carried but we weren't a straight shot roofing supplier. Sold other hardware and lumber.

Tamko and Atlas traded blows with consumers and roofers, mostly just what color matched what people wanted.

I always told people who came in, that the MAIN THING to be concerned with is the underlayment. Synthetic was starting to get popular but still wasn't selling as much as usual tar. Your underlayment takes hundreds if not thousands of holes from nails and that's where your leaks really start.

However, side note. I know Atlas also does a big warranty upgrade if you use their StormMaster Shingles.

I sell Certainteed exclusively.

I have put every brand on a scale from Atlas, Tamko, Malarkey, OC, GAF and Certainteed and they are they heaviest weight per square.

I tell everyone that Black and Weathered Wood are the safest colors. They generally go with any brick and paint color.

Synthetic felt is definitely the way to go for the underlayment. 15#/30# is water resistant, but synthetic is truly waterproof. The cost is down now to where its only about $1-2 per square more expensive.

Building a house now. Contractor quoted atlas. Found out before install that warranty problem with foam insulation sprayed under roof. Changes to certainteed. No warranty issues
