Who here is in a union? Do you feel it helps or hurts?

I’ve always had a negative opinion esp in today’s economy with being forced by employers to pay union dues, etc.
Seems very mob/mafia related.
Has any OTers ever actually benefited from being a union member?

I am in one, but in education, you have to be in one for the legal coverage. I am not in the one connected to NEA

Fire dept I work for of course has a union. I however am not in it.

I am represented by a union. I don't pay dues and I feel that the union is 90% negatives to positives.
Mandatory union dues should be illegal.

I was in a union and the so called protection and benefits of a union only applies to the top 1/3 of the union.

I've never worked for one but know of a couple.
Seems like the most inefficient way to employ people. Former neighbor was a union man. Loved it but he was EXTREMELY slow to do anything. Said he always took a break on schedule, and didn't do anything to really GAF at work. One of the most ridiculous concepts in unions is the seniority concept. Once you've been at the company for awhile, you will never get fired. Even if the people behind you are more efficient and have a better work ethic than you.
How unions weasel their way into companies is something I still don't comprehend.

This country was built on unions.. You can thank unions for having a the weekend off and a 40 hr (in most cases) standard work week.
A lot of conservatives i know poopoo unions, right up until the point that they need one to go to bat for them.. Perfect example, i have an uncle who is a big MAGA guy, works at a plant and got fired.. he claimed it was an unjust firing and the union he was mandatorily required to be a part of took his case and fought for his back pay, job reinstatement etc... My uncle got what he was fairly entitled to, but still talks ish about unions.. Typical hypocrisy.

While that is one case that I guess you can say it was worth it, most of the time it is not. What I see is unions protecting the lazy who don't do their jobs. They had their time and were effective. Now, not so much.

I have never been in one. Never worked anywhere that had a union.
Dad was in a union most of his working life. It was mostly positive, but in the mid-80's it started losing its influence and things started getting worse. Mom had to go back to work, his shifts started being rotated, decrease in health benefits, etc.
I'm mostly a pro-union guy, but recognize there are some issues with them.

I have been in two unions in my life. Both when I was very young.

Member of a union. Ours is relatively benign, but they do negotiate our contracts with the company. We get overall better pay, benefits, and working conditions than non-union in the same field (telecom). There are some abuses for sure, but they help keep us making decent money and receiving benefits when both of those things are becoming more and more rare in our industry.
FWIW, I was solidly anti-union before I started this job. But, I’ve come around on them. Still opposed to public sector unions, but if a group of private employees wants to band together and get better working conditions, it’s not really a huge deal.

I'd always opt for being in a union. The way I see it, both union leadership and company executives are crooked, but at the least the union would sometimes look out for my best interests.

My dad worked his whole life in pipefitters union starting back in the 50's, I did for a short time. However, the unions suffered when they were forced to integrate. Suddenly, they were taking in people off the streets to fill quotas mandated by the feds. My Dad saw it happen and what it did to workers. People brought in were suddenly making the same money as skilled welders and pipefitters but not doing any work, so all production slowed down.
Back in the early years of the 20th century, unions did good, however, in today's world, they have outlived there usefulness. Look at what they have done to the auto industry in this country- holding the car companies for ransom!

unions undoubtedly have many problems, and are ripe for the greedy and corrupt. there's no two ways about that.
however, I'd love to hear one of the many, many very intelligent and thoughtful neocon posters here explain how the graph below is illegitimate

This has become such a tired, cliche response. Just look at the widening wage gap between blue collar wages and executive pay. Visit some factories out there that cut corners on employee safety. There is still a need for unions.

I honestly dont know... and if i’d Asked him for specifics, he’d have surely given me his side of the story, while conveniently leaving out the company’s , and whatever side the truth might be on.
My point still stands that most people will badmouth unions til they need one.. Maybe those people should realize that, while far from perfect, unions are more useful than they are counterproductive... I think that’s the crux of the issue; we can all agree that some lazy people fall through the cracks.. but i’m on the side that says those people are the exceptions, and for the vast majority, unions are effective.

funny how most of these, "the cream rises to the top" people you meet are almost NEVER the cream or anywhere near the top
