Have an uncle that said he would swim across false river with his clothes in a milk jug to keep them dry. Put em on when he crossed and go to work.
I’ve heard this story a couple dozen times from old baws from that area

Grew up swimming in Bayou Teche. Still will occasionally swim in Delcambre canal or bayou tigre.

False River is not a Bayou
It’s not even a river
It’s a lake

I swim in the Amite Diversion all the time. It is pretty much just a kinder gentler bayou. For a workout, I prefer it to a pool.

I swam in bayous many times. The Teche, Fuselier, the crabbing spots along the way to Holly Beach with gators 8feet from me.
The only bad thing was stepping on a trot line and having to pull the hook out of my foot.

Some people wear vagina hats those like us have swam in bayous.
Seems that many are metrosexual types or not from Louisiana, The Bayou State

Swam in a lot of bayous when a teen and into my 20's, but that was back in the 60's and 70's.
With the amount of gators I have seen in many bayous now when fishing, that's going to be a no for me.

We used to swim in the bayou when I was a kid in the 80s. I wouldn't want my boys swimming in there today.
I remember as a kid, I was swimming in the bayou and it suddenly hit me "what about the snakes?!" My uncle told me don't worry about the snakes, the gators scare them away. And I was fine with that.

Well everybody blames his old man,
For makin' him mean as a snake,
When Amos Moses was a boy
His daddy would use him for alligator bait.
Tie a rope around his neck,
and throw him in the swamp!
Alligator bit him in a Louisiana bayou
Amos Moses

Had to run from the cops when I was a teen, 8 miles through the woods to avoid a pot charge.
Had to wade through bayou and chest high water. Luckily it was december. But, hypothermia was not my 1st, 2nd or even 3rd concern.

How come CCR wrote a song about being born on a bayou but they were from SoCal?
Was this some Coonass cultural appropriation?
When touring they had a breakdown in Grosse Tete, LA of all places.
They ended up buying a house backed up against the bayou because of how cheap it was. When they left they abandoned it, and it was a drug house for years after.

We would swim in Bayou St. John until the cops ordered us out of the water.

That’s a NO for me. I only swim in pools and the ocean. I would rather come across a shark than a snake or alligator.
