How did Disney approve The Last Jedi's Script?

Whether you like the TFA or not, JJ did have some interesting things set up such as: The Knights of Ren, Rey's parents, and Snoke.
But then Rian Johnson comes along and does nothing with it. Who are the Knights of Ren? Rey's parents are some junkers or some shite. Snoke is dead in the most anticlimactic way possible. There was no character progression and it did not set up any excitement for TROS. It's like he just wanted to subvert expectations, without realizing that doesn't necessarily make it a good movie. Disney obviously had not planned the trilogy out logically.

Hence why I say the conflict in TLJ was Rian vs proper script writing.
Just about everything possible that could have been done to subvert the existing SW universe was done, much of it apparently for shits and giggles.
You know, ignoring that Lucas based A New Hope off Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” to where there was a cycle that would start with the hero in one place then end with them in a similar place but profoundly changed by the events of the film.

1. Diversity? Check.
Yup, we are good to go. Greenlight it!

TFA was a good start to the trilogy. Last Jedi ruined anything it started.
After finishing Rebels I hate TLJ even more. A cartoon was 1 million times better.

Disney Exec: "Rian, it says here that you'll have bombers dropping bombs in space?"
Rian: "That's correct."
Disney Exec: "But how can you drop bombs in space?"
Rian: "... The girl who drops the bombs is Asian."
Disney: "Well obviously we can't make a change there. Good luck, Rian."

It was a pretty bad script, which is sad bc Lopper and a Brock were both pretty well written for the most part.

This is like the most over used phrase this year. wow

Considering Disney made all their money back on their investment from the Force Awakens and as popular as that movie was I guess they thought they could just mail it in.
Rogue One was pretty good too so they thought those movies would do well also.
Then comes the Last Jedi and the backlash was really bad. Captain Phasma was a joke. Rose was horrible. Leia died in real life. Luke's role was embarrassing to the franchise.
Then here comes Solo - rewrites, new director Ron Howard had to come in and try and save it. That movie was a disaster and it really ruined a back story for one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars saga. Solo would have been a perfect launch of Disney + as a series.
Now they have to find a way to salvage the ending of the entire Skywalker saga, we shall see if they can pull it off.
Then they will take a long hiatus from films.
At least the Mandalorian has somewhat saved them on Disney + with Baby Yoda. Maybe some of the standalone films would work a lot better on Disney + and they could do some series of origin stories, etc. in lieu of big feature films to get back in good grace with all the Star Wars nerds.

Were your expectations that it wouldn't be a steaming pile of shite? Well, we subverted the hell out of that.

I'm not much of a SW nerd, but didn't they drop bombs on the asteroids in ESB?

Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote ESB, wrote The Force Awakens.
Say what you will, but it just worked. It was a homage to ANH, not a rip off

Solo was actually pretty good but suffered from following TLJ. Die hard SW fans sat it out and casual fans didn’t care to see it.
The writing wasn’t the problem. Lawrence Kasdan, writer of ESB and TFA wrote Solo.

The bigger question is how did Disney not have an outline for the trilogy?

I don't know why people are so up in arms over dropping bombs in space. When 95% of the stuff they do in space in the movie is impossible. Short list...Sound, explosions with fire, banking with spacecrafts. I love how when they are inside of a space ship, they can hear the battle outside.
BUT OH NO.....DON'T DROP BOMBS IN SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Subvert expectations is the new "popcorn flick" to deflect from calling something what it really is which is crap.

Solo was actually pretty good. Go back and rewatch it. I think a lot of the initial reaction to hit were caused by the leaks predicting disaster.

You know where the Saga should end?
Return of the Jedi. Perfect ending.

Yay, we are still talking about this after two years

The short answer is that Kathleen Kennedy is a technician not a visionary.
Here is the long answer.
If you have a great idea and you need a producer to make sure everything goes according to schedule and that you have everything you need to make the movie... she's one of the best in history.
She is also about as creative as the stuff I fish out of my cat's litterbox. She is the worst sort of person to "guide" a film franchise you can possible have. You give her an idea and by golly she'll find a way to make it... whether it sucks or not.
Match her with a good script and someone with a clear vision for the product and you get stuff like "The Mandalorian". Match her with a bad script and poor execution you get "The Last Jedi." That last decade or so before she landed this gig she wasn't producing for Spielberg and Lucas and she had a string of bombs. She can't tell a good idea apart from a mound of badger turds.
Kathleen Kennedy is not the guy... err... gal you want running a franchise. She's the gal you want working for the person who is running the franchise. Kind of like a great coordinator who turns out to be complete dog mess as a head coach.
Someone like Lucas to provide the broad direction of the Franchise and someone like Kennedy to oversee the day to day operations and you've got a license to print money.

TFA was a good start to the trilogy.
