Clearly he and O have decided to play bend, don’t break and keep everything in front of you. With this O and the inexperience on D (including a weak line), why not do that? I would play the odds too if I were them.

A- what you’re saying is false, not every team has this many injuries and to their best players
B- again not true, this team isn’t deep at all and isn’t loaded with healthy talent. We’re not even 2 deep at every position on D and we don’t have a single free safety on the entire roster. Grant Delpit isn’t a 5* or first round athlete at present, Stingley is about 85%, Fulton can’t outrun Trask, Lawrence is about 65%, Logan is hurt, Vincent is hurt and Divinity, Harris, Joseph, Thomas, Anthony aren’t here anymore.
You’re proceeding from a fairy tale idea of what we have personnel wise. You even countered your own talking point, you can’t say everyone has injuries then name the injured players as “loaded NFL talent.”

I feel like he can't possibly be this bad at making adjustments and calling defenses - I think quite a bit of this is on the players.

Our HC speciality is the DL. Coaching isn’t the issue.

It's never just one thing.
I've never loved Aranda's 3-4 scheme, but it has had relatively good success. A big problem is LSU simply doesn't have any great pass rushers at the DL/OLB spots. That hurts the pass defense. No matter how great your DB's are, they can't cover forever. Plus, Delpit hasn't been anywhere close to the same player he was in year's 1 and 2 for whatever reason.
Then, we see just how big of a loss D. White was. In addition to being a tremendous athlete, he was a very instinctive football player. The current ILB's are inconsistent in their reads and often get out of position (we saw that Sat. where they allowed huge cutback lanes). Take all of that and combine it with the fact that offenses are having to throw the ball often to try to keep up with LSU, and the numbers look bad (relative to past LSU defenses).
I don't think this is a good defense. But I don't think it is bad either. It is inconsistent, and teams have seemingly been able to adjust during the game while LSU hasn't (except for maybe the Fla. game). LSU did fine shutting down Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss in the first half.

I get it, but come on man. Vandy and Ole Miss? It's not just our fans that see the problem. Stevens said "We lose this game (OM) if it wasn't for Burrow."
Peter Burns of ESPN on SECN:

There is ZERO doubt that LSU deserves to be #1 in the CFB Playoff.
4 Top 10 wins, Heisman winner and an incredible offense....they deserve it.
But their defense is a liability and I'd take Ohio State and/or Clemson in a game right now
Saturday Down South:

How long can Joe Burrow continue to carry this defense?
quote:
Burrow has covered for this defense several times this season. And it looks like he’ll have to do it some more.
Maybe the Texas game was an aberration.
Maybe the Vanderbilt game was nit-picking.
The first half against Florida didn’t matter because of the second half against Florida.
The Alabama game didn’t matter because when you beat Alabama after eight straight losses nothing else matters.
But Ole Miss?
Ole freakin’ Miss?
Yeah, LSU won Saturday in Oxford and won fairly easily, 58-37.
But this one doesn’t get dismissed as easily as Alabama or Texas or Florida. Not even Vanderbilt.
Ole Miss had 614 yards. Ole Miss ran for 402 yards.

we give up big plays in the run game because we’re a very slow defense. Our LBs are average at best

Who has been recruiting these guys? Seems like Orgeron and Aranda have been here since 2016.

Anyone taking Clemson over us right now is high as frick.

Pretty nice of the defense to let us build up a big lead over Bama and legit win us the game against Auburn.

If this D were as healthy as last season it would be a totally different story.
A&M game we used injuries as an excuse. You don't think the highest ranked defenses aren't dealing with injuries also?
quote:
There’s nothing wrong with Aranda
as long as we have healthy elite talent right? Apparently he can't scheme to make up for injuries. He did not bring any run blitzes or stack the box against OM. When a team rushes for 400+ yards on you it's time to stack the box and make them throw.

Ask Auburn how many games there D line has won them this year.
Posted on 11/18/19 at 8:35 am to TigerBlood17
Complacency is the problem. Look at the first halves against Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, and even Vanderbilt. All dominant defensive performances. OM and Vandy were really never in doubt.
Let's look at Texas. Do we win that game without the back to back goal lines stands by the D in the first half? Do we beat Alabama without Phillips snagging that interception setting up a late 1st half TD?
We all need to accept that our D will not have the statistical numbers we are accustomed to, but they do a great job at setting the tone early in games. And they're capable of playing good 2nd halves when needed a la Florida and Auburn.

I think you're over rating LSU's defensive talent.
I believe their performance this season has been consistent with their real talent level, not their recruiting rankings.
DL and LB are not overly stocked with NFL talent as in past years. And while LSU is strong at CB, they are average at S. And due to depth issues are being forced to put true freshmen into important games in crucial situations.
20 years from now, no one is going to care how many yards JRP gained. We will look back and remember another win in what is turning into maybe the best LSU football season of all time.
Those of you all bent out of shape about Plumlee's performance ought to focus on the big picture, remember this was a 'let down' game for LSU, and that OM always fights their hardest against us.
If you've been watching OM at all this season you have to acknowledge that they are getting better every week. They battled against Bama and they gave us their absolute best shot. [They are going to whip MSU next week IMO]
If our defense is so damned 'talented', why couldn't any of them catch Plumlee? Or even tackle him consistently? Because LSU was out-manned. Period.
We need to stop getting high off our own supply and recognize that there are some limitations with our defensive personnel, and admit that the coaching has done a good job of covering up those weaknesses.
Not to mention that Burrow guy and what he's doing.

Are you saying the best defensive mind in the game can only field a great defense with elite talent? You really think it's ok for OM to rush for 400+ yards on us using maybe 2-3 different plays? No adjustments can be made by the best defensive mind in the game? that's just crazy.
He plays a scheme that makes our defense passive...playing aggressive puts more pressure on an offense and generally makes for better tackling.

There isn’t 1 playoff contending team that has had their 5 best defensive players hurt all season long. Hell I bet you can’t name any other team that’s had it. You’re just not being honest about the situation.

Auburn has a shitty offense starting a true freshman quarterback
