I dont know how Lydia didnt recognize him. Maybe she had never seen him without the mask, but that is a stretch.
As to why he didnt flip out on seeing Lydia... maybe he left the group to start his mission before Alpha told everyone she had killed Lydia.

timeline doesnt work unless i'm misremembering.
alpha goes to the fair and tries to grab lydia.
lydia decides to stay.
alpha goes back and says she killed lydia.
dante is present at the beheadings.
dante then shows up at alexandria after the reveal of the border poles.

One thing they've never explained is what happens when a solo wanders in.
At this point, figuring in the solo person's backstory must be a requirement. Seems like it would be kind of hard to keep up a lie full time.
Eventually where you've been and what you've done will come out, that's just human nature.

I know, but there is also a teaser that shows his eyes pop open in the bedroom. That doesn’t mean that he’s not dead in the next episode but he might survive long enough to leave a clue to Dante’s true identity,
