I would worry about the ear-piercing sound of 556 in a house if it ever came down to it, but in a do or die situation I guess you have to make some sacrifices.

Read up on auditory exclusion. You likely won’t even hear the rifle go off. Your ear drums will still register the sound and could still take some damage but you won’t register that until way after the shooting.

The 5.56 is a great home defense round and I personally use an AR to defend my home. It has been shown to go through fewer walls than buckshot since it is very light and fast and has an easily disturbed flight path. I can personally attest to this from when I ran a drill at a shooting course - I was barely catching the edge of the plywood barrier and my target 10 yards downrange had bullets keyholing, meaning they were impacting it sideways. Every time a small, fast bullet hits a barrier, it is considerably more likely to lose stability and tumble. This is why it will penetrate fewer walls compared to a heavier projectile.

Also as stated by others, shotguns are good home defense weapons. With buckshot you have good downrange terminal performance but the recoil is brutal compared to something like an AR. You also get considerably more rounds at your disposal. Shotguns are good home defense weapons but they aren’t the best - there’s a reason most law enforcement squads use ARs for close quarters combat.

I also hate hearing the argument of “why do you need 30 rounds?” I want the most possible ammo I can conceivably have at my disposal. So that means a fully loaded handgun, 17 rounds for a full sized one, or a fully loaded rifle, with 30 rounds ready. I likely won’t need 30 but I’d rather plan for a best case scenario than hope my threat isn’t on some kind of drug and needs 15-30 rounds to go down.

Nah, rifles are objectively better for defense.

In the light of day, probably.

At 3a.m., with little to no light, I'll take the shotgun loaded with buckshot each day and every day (night).

A pump shotgun also is the best for ending the fight even before it gets started. The sound made by racking a shell into a pump shotgun in the dark should get all but the most hardened criminal to exfile the home pronto, which makes it a better situation for all involved.

This is so stupid but gets repeated on every one of these threads.

I do know about that, but I don't know how well it would apply to all my sleeping loved ones woken by the sound.

Not saying I wouldn't use it if I had to. Am saying I really hope I never have to.

You wouldn’t want your loved ones to be aware of an intruder in the house? I get the sentiment of not wanting to startle them or damage their ears but I would think that’s the time you want them most aware of the fact that a threat is nearby.

I’ve seen people talk about running a suppressor on their home defense weapon and I think if you’ve trained with it that’s a good option. But for me, I don’t mind running the risk of a bit of eardrum damage if it means saving my family.

Within the distance to a target that would be encountered in a typical home the pattern of even the shortest shotgun will be so small if you don't aim just like a rifle you will just as easily miss the target. Numerous YouTube videos demonstrate this as well as the wall penetration of various shotgun loads.

Actually the use of a suppressor on a home defense weapon is of tremendous help to the homeowner, and not for the noise factor.

The suppressor hides muzzle flash, which helps with the homeowners maintaing a cleaner sight picture that isn't screwed up by muzzle flashes as well as hiding the muzzle flash from the intruding perp(s) and thus not giving away your position.

As my Pop said, from his time in Nam, rarely do you fire at targets, but you almost always are responding to incoming fire by returning fire at the enemies muzzle flashes ( obviously especially during night-time engagements)

I keep a 12 gauge close by, first shell is 6 shot, and it's buck shot after that. I wouldn't even worry about shouldering. It's a pump but it's already been racked, just sitting on safety. I'm not worried, and my Border Collie is a pretty good advance warning system to any would be intruders.

I have all corners covered within reach of my nightstand.

SBR AR 5.56
Glock 19
20GA shockwave (for the wife)

I am going to My AR first for a couple of reasons. First it has a sure fire scout so I don’t have to worry about grabbing a flashlight. Second it has 30 rounds. If gun battle incurs with multiple people I have enough rounds to fend off. Lastly it’s loud as frick.

AR15. It's all you need if you want a rifle. You have 30rds. Ammo is cheap also.

Personally if I could have a belt fed machine gun to defend my home, I'd have one.
