They cripple livestock, and are diseased.

I look at it like yote or bobcat hunting. Cant eat them, but they are problematic for land owners...like mice or rats.

bison have been roaming the prairies for millennia without being crippled by prairie dog holes. Cattle are the introduced species
many small animals are disease vectors. Crowding them into smaller and smaller territory only makes the problem worse

I see both sides of it. I don't think that native wildlife should be considered less important than livestock. I do think that some species require population control since we have upset nature's balance. I don't know enough about prairie dogs to have a strong opinion about it.

What do you do with mice that enter your home? Or moles that dig up your yard?
Posted on 10/28/19 at 2:52 pm to cgrand
I see what you're saying except the inhumane part. They all seem to be dispatched of quite quickly.

Never understood the desire to kill things without eating them.

the desire
Its land management/rodent management. Some people may get a kick out of it but where these things are a nuisance it is legal and encouraged.

dogs take care of both, predator and prey like nature intended. Neither are sport activities for me though the dogs seem to enjoy it

Quit being a bitch, that dog never knew what hit him, it's not like he is being tortured. They are literally everywhere out west and are some land destroying little bastards.

True but that is something we can't change regardless of how bad we would like to. We have to play the hand delt and that requires population control.

I shoot squirrels all the time with my .22 Air Rifle that enter and exit the eaves of my house. No amount of deterrent I've tried keeps them from chewing the soffits and eaves so I dispatch of them.
It's protecting property.

Flying squirrels?
I get but damn I like them little guys, cool as hell to watch. Use to catch them as kids until they got loose in the house.

nice to meet you too brother.
feel free to disagree as I noted in my first post, your prerogative of course. Of the two of us though you seem to be the emotional one about this

Gotta be they would eat better than squirrels?

Prairie dogs carry the plague. We don't even approach the carcasses much less consider eating them. I go out once a year to CO and help with population control. We have a group of ranchers who host and feed us just so we will hunt their properties. They look cute and all but they are a true nuisance much like we are having here with the hogs.

IIRC, what you see is condensation caused by the low pressure immediately behind the bullet.

Same. As I've grown older, I appreciate seeing critters in their habitat. I'll kill for food or protection only. But I understand we all don't have the same values.
