So let's just leave them to be slaughtered by Turkey? Why not at least give them time to work out an agreement with the Assad regime to maintain some degree of self autonomy?

We made irresponsible commitments to the Kurds.

If we weren’t there, they would have made a deal with Damascus.

They were also foolish enough to bet on us though.

The best solution is what you suggest, giving them a short window to make a deal with Damascus. But the Israel lobby, which finds the Kurds useful, would never permit that.

Do you honestly think Turkey is going to prosecute and convict the ISIS prisoners in the Al Hawl camp? They will just set them free to create havoc in Kurdish areas, doing them a favor from their perspective!

No, Erdogan isn’t going to crack down on Isis.

They’ll eventually betray each other though.

I bet we only know half the story. This is just the way Trump operates.

How many infantry division do they command?

That’s a joke but also a serious point, they do not have the power to do anything. Only member states do.

But honestly, we should be working to reintegrate the Kurds into Syria. That’s their best option. Partition, Turkish occupation, those are both highly destabilizing and will only provoke further conflict.

Is northern Syria part of the USA?

If we are responsible for the entire world.. why do we only place shitholes in our sights? Just saying...Canada is right up north.. we can send the army up there and occupy and control it a lot easier than it takes to occupy and control these third world shitholes.

If we're in the business of occupy and control, then lets aim for better quality of the shite that we occupy and control .

I just can’t speculate. I don’t know how complex his thinking is.

Trump certainly lays traps for his domestic enemies.

All of this is sort of my point. What has the "international community" been doing with regard to this? Why seemingly nothing?

If this was a trap for Erdogan then why did we just force the SDF to dismantle all their fortifications along the border? This is Trump being a bonehead on a phone call and not thinking through the long term implications of a decision.

Way back in 2001, I was reluctantly in favor of the USA trying to do a bit of "nation building" over there. But that's now over 18 years ago, and the US military is STILL over there with no end in sight for this nation-building.

AND NOT ONE General Officer of Flag Officer, active or retired, has ever explained to the public WHY they have failed to complete this mission.

It is high-time for SOMEBODY in authority to be an adult and end this Forever War -- even if that person in authority is We the People.

The reason why no one has explained it, is because for their goal to truly happen we are talking generations, with an s, for it to come to fruition.

I feel bad for the Kurds, but then again they have been supported by the US since the first Gulf War. If they could not carve out a spot of their own by now, was it ever going to happen.

Geopolitics is a heartless beast and at some point the US has to accept they cannot save everyone or stop all wars. This was a hard lesson we had to accept in Africa and should be now be accepted in the ME as well.

Did they???

How have the Kurds reacted?

On Monday a spokesman for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - who occupy former IS territory in north-eastern Syria - strongly condemned the US move.

"There were assurances from the United States of America that it would not allow any Turkish military operations against the region," Kino Gabriel told Arabic TV station al-Hadath.

He added: "The (US) statement was a surprise and we can say that it is a stab in the back for the SDF."

We cannot stop all wars but we should try to prevent them when and where we can.

We're withdrawing 1000 troops. If 1000 troops is preventing escalation that could domino into WWIII, why make this move, and why now. Before next year's election? Democrats weren't going to campaign on Syria because it's their mess.

They have neither the power nor the desire to do anything.

Kurdistan isn’t worth the bones of a single Pomeranian Grenadier.

Turkey is a NATO member that borders Syria. ISIS prisoners are far more their problem than ours.

BTW, Turkey was planning on invading. Do you favor war with turkey?

We're withdrawing 1000 troops.
Maybe.

A U.S. official said American troops had withdrawn from two observation posts on the border, at Tel Abyad and Ras al-Ain, and had told the commander of the SDF that the United States would not defend the SDF from an imminent Turkish offensive.

U.S. troops elsewhere in Syria remain in position. The pullback will initially be limited in scope to a patch of territory near the Turkish border where both countries had been working to establish a special security area, a U.S. official told Reuters on Monday.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, did not say whether the troops would leave the country or reposition elsewhere in Syria, where the United States has around 1,000 forces.

Which relationship is more important? Our relationship with Turkey or the YPG?

We should favor removing Erdogan. Damn shame the coup against him failed a few years ago. He has turned a NATO ally into a jihadist exporter.
