To be honest, I think Joker stands alone as the sure-money villain. Even when he was done poorly he brought in a big audience.

It was good but it was basically Taxi Driver, which is interesting bc Marty just called comic books not even cinema but theme park rides.

Ironic

if the movie wasn't called "Joker" and the setting wasn't in Gotham City and Pheonix didn't paint his face, would we still view this movie as being as good as it is? Oscar worthy even?

Yes. Having this story as a Joker origin actually detracts from it.

does it really though? what about the story intrigues the audience beyond it being a Joker story. i have a feeling if you rename the movie and remove the facepaint, this is just another sunday afternoon flick you'd might catch at the theater because nothing else was out and you were bored.

i bet if it was renamed something completely different and DC wasn't attached to it, the marketing for it wouldn't exactly attract the number of people it did this past weekend. i could come up with a drama where a kids parents gets murdered and slap Batman in the title and people would show up in droves to watch it.

This movie was basically Taxi Driver, which won a shite-ton of awards so, yes I think it would still be a good movie.

Thought is was an extremely well-made movie. The story, cinematography, music and general atmosphere of was near perfect for me. And as most have said, Phoenix put on one hell of a performance.

I saw it a few days ago, and am still undecided if 80% - 90% of the movie was in Arthur's head. For reasons others have pointed out, I was inclined to say no at first. However, after thinking about it for a few days, they do set up Arthur's fantasies as being real to us as viewers; there are a few scenes that made me wonder why it was filmed that way; and of course this is the Joker, who you never know. Even Ledger's Joker told different stories as to how he got his scars. So now I'm leaning towards most of the movie being imaginary.

You've seen the movie twice. Did you pick up on anything in the second viewing that convinced you one way or the other??

As others have said, there were too many scenes where Arthur realized that he'd fantasized his relationships with Murray and Sophie and that they weren't real relationships. If you think that Arthur imagined the entire movie then you have to accept that he imagined having realizations of imaginations, which is a bit much.

Everything seemed just as real in the second viewing. There were no tells like in Unbreakable, where you can really see in the second viewing that he was having one way conversations with the living.

I've been saying for years if they did R rated villain origins instead of rebooting hero films..it would just be better

well, if this movie is "basically Taxi Driver", then is the plot "original"? i mean, that's what we're saying makes Joker so great afterall, right? it's originality? but is it really original?

if this movie wins awards, i think it should win cinematography and maybe best actor. but this is by no means best picture.

I agree. I thought it was great, very enjoyable, but not really that original.

While I enjoyed the movie, that wasn't The Joker. That was a 2hr realistic drama on a criminally-violent insane patient.

"Criminally insane, violent, and often spends time as a patient in an asylum" sounds a whole hell of a lot like... Joker.

Of course the idea that it is the Joker brings in the big money. Doesn't detract from the idea that it is a good movie in my mind. Phoenix is great in it and I thought it was outstanding in the build up to him being the joker. But if you take the joker out of it, it is still a good movie. Wouldn't get the numbers, but would probably still get buzz due to quality for awards. Many Oscar worthy performances come from nothing movies, and mega dollar movies many times have crap acting.

The joker part of it, plays no part in the quality of the movie(or lack of it, if you think so), but in the numbers.
Personally I liked seeing that slow build to the Joker. Seeing the change of the character.

A Star Is Born, a straight remake of a remake of a remake was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. While it didn't win either, it was at one time considered the front runner. Whatever similarities Joker has with other films should not be a factor.

There's difference between (Unabomber) Ted Kaczynski and Mark David Chapman (who shot John Lennon), even though both are criminally violent with mental disorders.

Joaquin's Joker can barely tie his own shoes or fill a pill dispenser, but you expect me to believe this is guy will one day:

-outwit Batman,
-successfully pull off a major bank heist,
-defeat a mob boss and take his gang,
-kill the police commissioner & a judge,
-attack a police convoy with military armament,
-take hostages to separate locations and rig explosives
-kill an international mob boss & his henchmen, then burn their money
-blow up a whole hospital
-take a busload of hostages
-rig two ferries with explosives

Again, great movie with great performances, great score, etc...but that was not The Joker.

He couldn't do any of those things partially because he was on so many medications he was in a drug induced haze and more docile.

As he could no longer get meds, he slowly became more lucid, more insane, and more confident.

That was a hell of a video. From the tear to the flower. So much attention to detail.

Just an FYI, there was no reported shootings during the opening weekend of this movie.

So the Joker didn't cause people to rampage like the media kept saying. Maybe next time.

He started to have classic Joker traits near the end. Sneaking into a secure theater to confront Thomas Wayne, the jokes ie speaking in a British accent to the midget after killing Randall, boisterous and flamboyant personality turning into murderous rage on a whim; pretty much was everything the joker is into generally
