I watched it in an old grindhouse type of place. It smelled of liquor and BO.
I highly reccomend that too..with this picture, it "felt right".

Nolan had Ledger break down the Joker character so much so that he basically was a one dimensional caricature of himself.
The Joker is supposed to be chaotically unpredictable and change his mind about his own goals quite frequently. Whereas Heath's version had one goal being to show that everyone is as fricked up as he is.
You know the guy who takes his political beliefs too far. The one who does not tolerate conflicting beliefs. Yeah, that's what TDK Joker is. Not a mastermind anarchist. He was a zealot.
Also, having one line (make this pencil disappear) doesn't make his version funny throughout.

TDK explores the Joker’s desire for chaos and did sacrifice some character depth to that end, but that’s also an important side to the Joker’s character.
The reason he’s so terrifying and the best of all of Batman’s villains is that, to the general public, he’s an elemental force of chaos and destruction just as Batman is an elemental force of order and justice. TDK went all in on Joker being pure and unsympathetic, which is how Batman and the public view him.
This movie showed what it takes to make such a monster, and as a result it gives a character portrayal with far more depth.
All of this discussion just goes to illustrate that the Joker is truly the best villain of all time.

That was my thoughts as well. It was so refreshing to watch an original movie that tugs on so much emotion. It was disturbing yet satisfying in an odd way. You forget you are watching a movie that has any ties to a comic. But somehow it all fit.

let's think about this quote for a moment. if the movie wasn't called "Joker" and the setting wasn't in Gotham City and Pheonix didn't paint his face, would we still view this movie as being as good as it is? Oscar worthy even?

No way it would kick off with a quarter of a billion worldwide without the Joker name. But it would still be an Oscar buzz performance (just in a movie that covered it's production costs instead of making a shitload of money).
Hopefully DC/WB can use this to get other directors/stars who aren't necessarily interested in superhero movies but want their films seen by massive audiences. A Blue Beetle/Booster Gold buddy cop movie, a Black Canary/Green Arrow rom-com, a Nightwing detective story... small films that'll get a bigger audience just from the association.
ETA: I also think that the Joker association allowed them to end the film in the manner that they did. Joker doesn't win 100%, yet he accomplishes a lot of goals. But we know how the remaining chapters go, so it's less of a "villain wins in the end" story.

Yes. Having this story as a Joker origin actually detracts from it. There's very little connection to Batman or DC lore. I wouldn't be surprised if this script had been floating around and someone studio exec said let's make this a comic movie and make ten times the box office.

It would be funny if they could get Phillips to a series of stand alone, arthouse DC Villian films that he can do what he wants with, make actual films but with the character involved.
