If so, how often (when) do you change strings?

I got a Martin D-35 a few years back, and I've always changed strings every 3 months. I've had the same set on for a little over half a year and I really like the sound and playability (softness) when I fingerpick.

Also, any opinions on strings?
I prefer medium pb's, either John Pearse or Martin.

I like whatever I can get for free sometimes. Lately though, I have been putting the elixrs on.

I've got some optima gold-coated strings I've had on my guitar since 2005. One day I'll have to change them. Maybe.

The gold coating is worn off in some places from my fingers but they don't sound dull at all.

I like Fender lights for electrics and D'addario phosphor bronze for acoustics. In particular, I get a ton of life out of the D'addario which somewhat justifies the premium price.

I feel bad - 3 months! I keep mine for a year or two. I have an acoustic with some Martins that I love that have probably been there for 5 years.

How much do you play?

I change them when a string pops. I’ve been using Elixirs the past few years.

This is my go-to, also. I tend to keep my favorite guitar tuned in Open G or Open C, so I tend to go with true medium or heavy. Lighter strings just get sloppier in the lower tuning.

I like D'Addario's phosphor bronzes, especially the PBs in the "EXP" coated family of strings. D'Addario's coating is ultra thin, doesn't affect the string's natural tone as much as Elixirs, and basically makes Elixirs look and feel primitive and inferior in comparison.

Change your strings as often as you like, depending on what your ears and fingers like, how hard your body's metabolism is on the strings, how harsh the environment(s) in which the guitar resides. That being said, I cringe at the thought of any bronze alloy acoustic strings being on any reputable, good sounding guitar for more than four to six months. No string, not even coated strings, will retain their inherent brilliance for a half a year, definitely not in the Gulf South. Then again, if you like darkened, to dull and drab tones, there are no rules really. Do as you wish.

For electrics, I like D'Addario's XL and their new XT series coated strings for my electrics with humbuckers. I like DR's "Pure Blues" series for my guitars with pure single coils (stock tele, stock strat, P-90s).

I'm big into half-flats recently, much nicer feel and tame the single coil shrillness. Also no squeaking!

Fret, I'm glad to see you endorse these. You might recall I'm an Ovation guy, and one thing I can say about the company, I found about those strings through them and I can't imagine using anything else on an acoustic. Fantastic strings even on my old Guild.

I'm thinking about getting an electric with humbuckers, maybe the James Tyler Variax (because I also dig Line 6) - maybe next year. So, you would think D'Addario XL is the way to go? Honestly, I don't normally play enough electric to really know outside of the stock strings on my Strat.

At least 2 to 3 times a week. Usually an hour or two at a time. Sometimes more.

I guess I change them so much because once they get that "dead" tone I usually change them. I have Martin SP's on now and they usually hit the sweet spot around a month. I've tried all kinds of strings, even monels, but I really am digging the versatility, sound, and longevity of the SP's. John Pearse PB's come in second. I'd say the best sounding strings I've ever used were from Thomastik-Infeld, but they are very expensive and didn't last long.

Elixir nanoweb and hardly ever change them on my strat. Same thing on the acoustic but probably change them twice a year.

Can confirm. I used Elixirs for years and on your recommendation I switched to EXPs and I haven't looked back. They sound better out of the box; they sound better 3 months later; they stay in tune. I can't ask more than that from a guitar string.

Highly recommend this instead of having to have multiple tunings

All mine have EB 10’s and 11’s

I like Elixir Nanoweb extra lights (I give them a good stretch when putting them on) for electrics and D'addario phosphor bronze for acoustics.

The frequency I play is sporadic so I change when gunk gets bad and/or tone is diminished. Fast Fret before every use. D’Addarios and bone nut/pins brought my acoustics to life.
