Is Orgeron a top 2 or 3 SEC Head Coach?

Saban at #1 is a given. I don't think anyone can argue with that, but it gets a little muddy after that. Has Orgeron coached/managed his way into the conversation for #2? I wouldn't put him there quite yet, but I feel like he's damn close. Top 5 no doubt. You can give all the credit to Brady, Burrow, Aranda - whatever, but Orgeron MUST be credited with recognizing problems and bringing/retaining those guys.
It took me awhile to feel comfortable saying this, but I strongly feel like LSU got the perfect HC for US. Would O be great elsewhere? Possibly some places, possibly not at others, but he's definitely becoming a great one for LSU. I'm excited to see the future of the program under his guidance.

His ability and willingness to try new things if something isn’t working has made him much more endearing for sure.
Some coaches absolutely refuse to change and just keep doing the same crap even when it’s painfully obvious that it no longer works.
For not being that stubborn jackass, he gets my vote.

He is well on his way. This year will determine that.

Some coaches recruit well and the players make them look good:
Miles, Jimbo
Some coaches are good at Xx and Ox
Saban
Some coaches are great at managing staff (bring in, changing and adapting, big picture guy)
Coach O,
although I think he has a little like type 2 in Defense
time will tell a little early yet

Takes a few years to decide these things. I would say he's headed that direction.

As of right now you have to put smart ahead of O.
Smart has won the SEC, got to the playoffs and made it to the NC game.
His resume is better but O could change that this year.
O is no lower than 3 right now though

You could not some it up better. Coach O has learned to manage a staff. I said after the hire, "if he can put the right pieces in place to coach and let them coach, he will be successful and reap the benefits of being a good or great coach". He's doing just that.

I love what he’s doing right now. I hope he continues it when his staff moves on. It’s inivatible, but i believe he will reload on staff

Flip your question around. What reason are there not to rank him in the top three in the SEC? Phrased like that it becomes a clearer yes, that as of now he is top 3 in the SEC.

Time will tell. More importantly, we upgraded the coaching position. We never would have gotten here with Miles. Disappointing it took so long.

His best year is 10-3. That is better than all but a few. Mullen has done as well at an inferior program. Kirby has done better at a similar program. Then there is Saban. Gus has done a LOT better, but he’s been wildly inconsistent. I’m putting him fifth, behind those four. If he makes the playoffs he vaults past Gus and Mullen and ties Kirby. That assumes none of them make the playoffs.
Anyway, not enough data yet. Give him two more years. 2017 me is amazed 2019 me is saying those words!

Most people would put Jimbo ahead of O based on his FSU resume. If you only count aTm time then yes he's second behind Saban and Smart

At best he’s fourth, but arguably lower. Until he wins an SEC Championship and/or makes it to the NC game he cannot he ranked above other coaches who have.

That's a really weird way of ranking.
I would certainly put him above Gus at this time who has won the SEC West and played in the NCG.

This is not a body of work and resume questionor a popularity question.
Today with the current activity with two games and the status of the program today
Orgeron is #2.

This is something that's probably better revisited after the season. A lot can happen between now and then.
