Somebody started a business selling parachutes for office workers after 9/11. They went on TV (I think the Today Show) and had a lot of trouble even putting it on. I’m sure the video is out there somewhere.

I have an older spare rig I’ll sell you; paid around 6k for it about ten years ago.

In truth, yes, as some have said in this thread, you would significantly increase your chances of surviving a 100 story jump with a parachute over not having one, but…

In all likelihood you’re actually increasing your chances* of death/injury by having it. You’re going to be more likely to use it, especially post 9/11, and it’s extremely rare that a fire in a modern skyscraper would leave you with no path of egress. You’re not going to have the slightest clue how to operate it; it’s not like the movies where you just jump and pull the red handle.

*- This is similar to the same reasons doctors don’t like to do some test. Because the risks of a false positive leading to an unnecessary and potentially risky procedure outweigh the chances of the supposed illness.

Strongly disagree. I think the implicit premise here is that you’d know for sure you were going to die if you didn’t jump/parachute. That’s the only time you’d use it.

I work in a high rise but I have a helicopter on my helipad at all times. I'm also a licensed helicopter pilot.

I sure am glad there are post police up in here to make sure everyone knows how grievous it is to talk about anything somewhat implausible on the OT, helping it to maintain its reputation for level-headed, always grounded in reality discourse.

During the Apollo program they had a zip line from the top of the tower down to the ground in case something went wrong and they had to evacuate the rocket before launch.

And NASA is doing the same thing again...

Winds would almost certainly blow you into the building, whereupon you either die on impact or get tangled up in your chute and plummet to your death.

Still, almost certain is not 100% certain, which is free falling or letting a million tons of rubble fall onto you.

So you’ve studied the building blueprints and have training in fire/rescue that would allow you to adequately assess the situation and come to a determination that the ONLY way out is to jump from the roof?

If you’ve done all that, then by all means, go calmly put on your rig, find an exit point, and jump away.

We can just laugh about this though, because ain’t nobody going to buy a rig, happen to have it accessible to them when the time comes, and actually be stuck in a high rise fire. If they are, then they need to land in the parking lot of the nearest 7/11, walk straight in and buy a lottery ticket.

They actually have a device that requires no experience. Looks kind of like an inflatable capsule with a parachute. I think they sell them threw amazon as well

Actually kinda figure this is what would happen to me:

Get the ‘chute open but then have a gust of wind slam me in to a building and knock me out resulting in death.

I’ve always wondered since if I worked in an extremely tall if I would consider keeping a BASE jump parachute and vest packed under my desk.

Nope. Ups the chance the janitor will see it. I'd prefer hiding it in the roof above where I'm working, and a second in an alternate hidden location probably closer to the roof.

That way if there was someone else worth saving, I'd hook them up. Or if I was barred off from my 1st go to.

Try to land on the roof of a different building

I don’t think anybody is talking about jumping out of a window because Richard from accounting burned his left over tortellini in the microwave and started a small fire two stories below.

I could afford it, and the chance of surviving + a small peace at mind is worth it.
