He’s implying they don’t have building codes on par with the US - to state the obvious.

160 sustained for a full day; I don't know how anything but the most fortified will be left standing. My house wouldn't.

Tragic.

is Nassau the closest national capital to the United States? Or is it Ottawa? Or Sacramento?

That's not accurate. The 160 is the max speed sustained for one minute. It is not a constant 160. And, that is not throughout the eyewall, rather a small area of the eyewall. I'm not diminishing what's going on, nothing much will be left, but just giving a more accurate description.

Ottawa is the answer at only about 42 miles from the US.

Havana is the closest island capital to US at about 105 miles (or around 80 if you consider territorial waters).

Nassau is about 180 miles from the US.

*Not sure of the answer if you want to consider US territories.

Yeah... they have better building standards than the US. Most of their structures are poured in place concrete or CMU instead of the weak dimensional lumber that most US houses are made of.

Silver lining, all that sewage that’s being flooded up from below the streets will be pushed out to sea. Anybody riding it out should open their doors to have all of it moved out with the current.

There shouldn’t be any building codes in the first place. Let the market (insurance rates, affordability, risk assessment, etc.) dictate how one decides to build their structure. Let poor/frugal people build their minimalist homes.

The government code gives everyone a false sense of security that they only need to meet the code and they’re safe. In a free market, people will be forced to understand the risk vs cost and will decide accordingly. Many will exceed the current code, while some who couldn’t otherwise afford to buy a home would be able to build their own shelter without cops killing/caging them for not being rich enough.

Also, without having this low bar set by the code, many neighborhoods with HOA’s might set the bar higher with more sustainable housing that lasts longer and doesn’t get as degraded as fast, causing the property value to drop as fast and ruining the neighborhood.

My home was built in 1895 before there were any codes.

It's stronger and better built then anything built to current standards.
