Do you even remotely believe if CNN had one source who was actually present during the supposed conversation, they'd have lessened the validity assigning their sources only as "people familiar with the matter."
"People familiar with the matter" is terminology used to accommodate 3rd party humor rumor traffickers. Someone who overheard someone else at the coffee machine discussing what they'd heard had been said is a person "familiar with the matter."

Do you honestly believe that?
Trump is using the Christmas story to provide a modicum of cover to Xi to get his act together and make a deal with the US. The whole world is watching Hong Kong right now, and this is the everything-is-streamed-live-on-the-internet world, not the 3 cameras from a hotel balcony, looking at Tiananmen Square in 1989 world.
China is tanking their own currency in hopes of mitigating the effect of the tariffs.
As Dan Bongino put it last week, Trump has them by the short hairs.
We'll likely see a deal w/ China made before Christmas.

Trump delayed the tariffs for this exact reason. The newest tariffs are the first that would hit mostly finished goods and their impact would be more apparent to the voting public than previous tariffs. His BS about China paying the tariffs would much harder to explain.
