every situation is different but I don't necessarily believe that is a good idea, again, each kid is different

What kind of trashy parent makes their kid pay for their first car?
The kind that wants their kid to be financially responsible before they turn 18.
And not think that they are going to be able to afford $7 sticks of chapstick while they are in college.

I had to buy my first truck and every one after that. A 2003 Ford Ranger Edge (bought in 2005)
Parents paid my insurance. I paid the fuel and all.

seems like more practical way to do this IMO

My first car was a '98 Civic that never had any problems. I think pop paid 4k for it.
Then I got a '89 Defender. Still miss that thing, even though that's where all the repair bills came.

My daughter will be paying for her car. She is 17 and been working since this past summer.

Bought both kids used cars in the 15K range and pay their insurance. I don't have a problem being both carry 4.0 GPA's. Figured it was the least I could do to reward them for their academic efforts.

My folks just couldn't afford to buy all of us a car. I'm one of 4 with just 7 years between the oldest and youngest. Add in 2 cars for them, and it just wasn't happening. They did pay insurance when we all bought our own cars.

I was given my first car because I had good grades. They spent $500 in the mid 90s. It didn't even have ac or heat.
I'll prob give my kids a little better as long as they have good grades etc.

got to structure the car situation by making them share the responsibility and learn fiscal responsibility without making it an impossible situation for them to have a car, I'm also of the opinion that a kid having a car is not some sort of teenage birthright, they don't need one just because Braxtyn got one

No. My kids were so busy, there was no way their mother and I could keep up with their schedules and full time jobs. It was a necessity for us.
Posted on 8/12/19 at 1:47 pm to NATidefan
No, but make sure they understand how much of a privilege it is to not have to pay for a car and have a car payment.
Its okay to financially support your children more than you had. The problem is when they dont understand that its not the norm and that they better appreciate it.

I inherited mine from my grandmother. Parents paid for insurance as long as I made grades. My kids will get a similar deal.

Best way I can come up with. Its practice for real life. We also plan to start giving her an allowance at 16 to pay for her clothes, make up, etc. Then she will be responsible for shopping for and buying everything but her food.

I’ll do what my parents did. I only paid for my gas during the summer while working.

If it's something new and rad, I understand this mindset. Wouldn't you be tired of juggling work hours to take them to school and work, though?

I dont plan on doing this... but im not Dave Ramsey

I'm curious how many of you that had your parents buy your first car blew a shite ton of money in your 20's.
