I love all those guys but I feel you gotta put Chad Jones on the list, maybe the most heart of any LSU defender. Plus he was a great lefty pitcher for Tigers natty champ team.
College World Series champion (2009)
BCS national champion (2007)
SEC champion (2007)

Tyrann Matthieu was the greatest defensive player I’ve ever seen at LSU. He completely took games over.

TM7
end of debate
single handedly turned around the SECCG against Georgia
Seeing that Kentucky QB strip TD in person was something else

I don't understand why Adams gets this type of praise. He had 1 int and 1 sac his junior year. Yes he was an all American and great tackler but I don't think he even makes my top ten all time best defensive tigers. Give me Eric Reed, Laron Landry, or Chad Jones, hell I would probably take Craig Steltz if I really thought about it.

Chad Lavalais
I remember reading quotes from Georgia offensive linemen that Chad knew every play Georgia was
running in the SEC Championship and was yelling their plays to other defenders before the snap.
Like many others, I gotta go with TM7. Never seen a defensive player impact games the way he did.

TM7 just might be the greatest player period in LSU history

Grant Delpit isn't far behind overall but doesn't tackle quite as physically as Adams did.

I've never heard that. That's funny. Dude's numbers were almost identical to Glenn Dorsey's in his senior year except Lavalais actually had way more QB hurries. I just remember Auburn going on 4th and 1 early in the game in 2003 and Lavalais busted through the backfield and threw Cadillac Williams for about a 10-yard loss. Auburn didn't stand a chance after that. Lavalais also blew up the center to and caused Eli to trip and fall down against Ole Miss for the W.

I love Adams, but I think Delpit last season was better than Jamal ever was. It wasn’t TM7 good, but we really shouldn’t undersell how great Delpit was last season.

Well, we all thought Delpit was getting tossed for targeting against Bama, but the refs called it off probably for fear of getting mobbed. And he got kicked out for targeting in the bowl game, but it was a BS call. I don't remember Adams being very undisciplined overall. He was a great tackler and had great fundamentals. But I think Delpit is better too. Delpit is just a much bigger playmaker. He led the SEC in interceptions last year with 5 and also had 5 sacks. He was all over the place.

People forget he did the same thing the week before.
LSU came out looking like shite against #3 Arkansas. Down 14-7 late in the first half, TM returns a punt 92 yards for a touchdown and then forced a fumble just 4 plays later to set up the go ahead TD. Lsu's offense looked like shite early and TM7's heroics ignited the beast and we blew then away in the 2nd half.
Imo the best college football player in LSU history and up there with the all time greats of CFB.

It was definitely one of the greatest individual seasons of all time. I remember thinking every game that he was going to make at least one game changing play and like clockwork he did it and often more than once. When you think about the fact that he was basically playing nickel cb/box safety at ~185 lbs and making the impact that he was making its pretty remarkable.

Whoa. Steltz. Yeah he’s gotta be on the list. What a savage.

It will be Grant Delpit this year. Dude seriously has the potential to be a top 3 pick as a safety, which is very rare these days. Absolute playmaker

Am I missing something or is everyone forgetting Chad Jones. He was one of hardest hitters who ever donned the Purple and Gold! He was a safety, but would have been a force at LB or DE anytime any day. Not a bad pitcher on the BB team as well! It was tragic when the car accident destroyed his NFL career!

Chad Jones was a good safety, but not on the Adams, Delpit, Reed level.

This is obviously a conversation with no true right answer, and I thought Adams was Awesome. Buuut...
I agree with this 100%. There’s not a player to come thru LSU that was the overall game changer on defense like Tyrann. He just has a nose for the ball. He was a really good corner but lacked size to be great there. That’s why he was used in the nickel spot a lot. He was a threat to change the game unlike any player I’ve seen in college period but at LSU for sure. He played the biggest part in many key victories for LSU the year we went to the natty game. Oregon, West Virginia, Arky, and Georgia for sure.
1. Mathiue
2. Devin white
After that there’s a ton of great arguments for star defensive LSU players. But I don’t think J Adams is any better than what Eric Reid was, just as far as the safeties go. Reid was s beast. Peterson and Claiborne were HUGE as well. But Mathiue was the biggest game changer and D. White was arguably our best defensive leader ever. Adams is top 10 no doubt! I honestly think if delpit stays healthy he’s got s good chance to be better than adams too
