Yesterday after work, I stopped at HEB to pick up a few things. I never give bums anything (money or food) as I refuse to support or enable their lifestyle.

A nicely dressed lady comes up to me and looks very stressed out and asks for my help so I listen. She says,

“I’m extremely sorry to bother you sir, but I had to run off the bus. I’m a nursing assistant, and there was a fight on the bus so I had to run off and forgot my purse. All I need is if you could pick me up a rotisserie chicken inside?”

I told her I didn’t have any cash on me and walked away. She obviously wasn’t a homeless but I guess I just thought the request was weird. As I was checking out I saw her on the phone at the customer service desk still looking extremely stressed. I guess I’m feeling bad about it today and not sure if I should’ve helped the lady out. I prob would’ve given her a ride, let her use my phone, or helped her if she were broke down...but a rotisserie chicken???

If I was a chic and left my purse on a bus the last thing I’m thinking about is a rotisserie chicken

Seriously? You get run off the bus with no cash, no phone, no ID and the one thing you ask someone to help you with is a rotisserie chicken?
You did the right thing.

I had a lady whose car overheated in front of my house a few weeks ago. Evidently, she just came from the grocery, and had a bunch of frozen food in her car, and asked if she could put it in my freezer until her dad got there to help her. I thought the chances of me getting robbed were high, but decided to help anyway. Sure enough, she handed me four bags full of frozen food, her dad came fifteen minutes later, and I gave her the stuff back. Haven't been robbed yet.

Sometimes, people aren't lying about their crazy stories. You just have to make the decision on the spot and roll with it, but you can change your mind afterwards and go help

Obviously not a scam she was running on you

Yes you should have bought her an 8 dollar chicken. You should feel awful and ashamed.

I give money to “bums” before I give money to people who apparently don’t need it.

Regardless, I would help either if I could.

9/10 times I would assume something like this is a scam and say no... but a rotisserie chicken? As opposed to money?

That's just odd. So odd that it makes me think it wasn't a scam.

Was her username BayouJ9 by chance?

I would have helped her call the cops and cancel all of her credit cards. Only after all that I would have bought her chicken.

If she refused, she’s a fraud

The chicken thing sounds weird. If she had asked to use the phone to call someone, that would have been more legit.

Weirdest thing like this that ever happened to me was in the Sydney suburbs near one of the train stations. An older guy (probably 50ish) who looked like he never got past his hippie days came up to me and asked for a few dollars for a train ticket. He said he had to get the box of tampons he had with him to his sister (and yes, he actually had a box of tampons with him). Weird.
