On March 4, 2002, Chapman along with members of the United States Navy SEALs took part in Operation Anaconda. The MH-47E Chinook, call-sign Razor 3[6] came under enemy fire, causing a Navy SEAL, PO1 Neil C. Roberts, to fall out during an insertion under fire. The helicopter landed 4.5 miles away from where the SEAL was killed. Once on the ground, Chapman provided directions to another helicopter to pick them up. After being rescued, Chapman and the team volunteered to rescue their mission team member from the enemy stronghold. After landing, SEAL team leader Britt Slabinski stumbled and fell. Chapman charged forward, killing two enemy soldiers and, without regard for his own life, kept advancing toward a dug-in machinegun nest. The team came under fire from three directions. Chapman exchanged fire from minimum personal cover and succumbed to multiple wounds. His engagement and destruction of the first enemy position and advancement to the second enabled his team to move to cover and break enemy contact. He is credited with saving the lives of the entire rescue team.

Absolutely incredible what a single man is capable of doing

Even more incredible is that those men were all willing to risk their lives just to recover a fallen comrade. It's a level of commitment and bad assery that 99.999999999999999% of the population will never be able to fathom, and that includes myself.

He’s got an end to end view of our southern border and the Dem debates.
Sad.
Sad.

I haven't read Alone At Dawn yet, but read Not A Good Day To Die by Sean Naylor. At the time it was written, it was publicized that Chapman died in the first assault. But even so, it did not present the SEAL team, particularly their commander, in a favorable light. If Chapman had been a SEAL they wouldn't have been so quick to abandon him.
I believe Neil Roberts was also alive longer than was initially reported. It was a fricked up operation from the gitgo. How they thought the mountain top was undefended is mind boggling. They attempted to land on the X , instead of hiking in, and things went rapidly downhill. Roberts jumped or fell as they tried to abort, and they had no choice but to go back.
It's a sad story of heroic actions by the flight crews and QRT. It wasn't the Navy's best day.

One thing I find amazing is that guy looks just like an ordinary every day dude and not some complete and total badass.

That video is tough to watch. What a hero

Amazing display of courage.
The fact that multiple men gave their lives on that snowy mountaintop in the middle of nowhere is chilling.

quote:Thats the same reason the Operation Red Wings got killed. The SEALs are notoriously bad and lazy when it comes to infantry type combat.

CCTs are amazing men!

The Wikipedia link from above suggests the Naval command tried to block the efforts to have Chapman receive the MoH.
