You realize he was treated at the hospital right? Given he had his kid in his hand and ended up at the hospital and not arrested on the spot with multiple witness accounts supporting him, the early assumption is he was in the clear here.
Treated. Lol. He went to the hospital w minor injuries and was discharged.
Arrested: lol Could you be more biased.

Take out the fact this guy had a mental disability, and your opinion would be drastically different. Take out this guy is a cop, and same thing.
No. It wouldn’t.

But people always forget we have 300 mil people in this country and most of them are freaking crazy.
Then maybe don’t bring your 1 year old out without several armed guards. Or at least a device that allows you to use both arms to defend yourself.

Absolutely not. The only difference would be the cop should've known better x2.
Wouldn't have excused a non-police moron either.
Nice straw man.
I realize I'm talking to I-12 drivers who are pro-torture. And you wonder why this board has gone to shite.

What in the name of holy frick is wrong with you people. Do you really think that pulling a gun much less using it lethally in this situation was in any conceivable way justified? A cop should be trained to deal with this with his bare hands. Take the kid out of "harm's" way and be a fricking man instead of a coward with a gun. And if you aren't that skilled then use it non lethally.
exactly correct, if you can't restrain an unarmed, so called 'retard' without using lethal force, you shouldn't be a LEO, and you probably shouldn't argue with people cutting in line for free samples at COSTCO
Dude was a power tripping, pussy

The video may show that the officer was within his rights. Or it may not. But either way, I don’t know that you can read too far into the fact that he wasn’t arrested at the scene. If he wasn’t a cop, wouldn’t you expect that he’d have been arrested at the scene rather than put on leave pending an “administrative investigation”?

Authorized LEOs are allowed to have weapons in Costco. Not sure if an off duty cop qualifies
LEOs can carry anywhere, regardless of local laws and business regulations.
There was a big hubbub a few years back about this bum frick town in New Mexico where a local volunteer police chief had "deputized" 300 volunteer officer (in a town of less than 500 )
His client list included personal security for billionaires, former military, former NFL players, and OT bawler Dan Bilzerian.
To get a badge they had to go to Lake Arthur, pay some cash, pass a few tests, and put in a few days of patrol. Some locals told me you couldn't pass through town without getting pulled over if there was a group training that week.
The wrong Republican bigwig (Robert Mercer) got a badge and that ended up ruining the NM operation after Bloomberg decided to write an expose.
pretty interesting read about it
Apparently these "pay for badge" programs still exist in multiple states, but they try to keep it on the DL.

Los Angeles Times Article
The articles I’ve read state the man was holding his baby and was briefly knocked unconscious and to the ground - unprovoked - by the mentally disabled man. Authorities reference video that show it was unprovoked.
I’m going to wait for more facts before I form an opinion on this situation, but if a big “special needs” guy randomly punched me while I’m holding the kid, I assume my husband would immediately shoot or stab him if he could.
So...
quote:
The attorney for an off-duty Los Angeles police officer who fatally shot a man described by his family as having an intellectual disability and two others at a Costco store in Corona said he was defending himself and 1-year-old child. The attorney, David Winslow, said the officer was getting a food sample for his son when he was attacked and briefly knocked out.
quote:
He was shopping with his wife and 1½-year-old at Costco. His son was was in his arms and he was feeding his son some samples when within seconds he was on the ground and woke up from being unconscious and he was fighting for his life,” Winslow said in an interview with The Times. Los Angeles police investigators are reviewing whether the officer violated any department policies in the altercation, officials said Monday.
quote:
Authorities said the assault, which was captured on Costco security cameras, was unprovoked and led the officer to fire his weapon, killing Kenneth French, 32, and wounding two of French’s family members, whom a relative identified as French’s parents. The officer did not know of the man’s disability at the time, according to a law enforcement source who spoke on the condition of anonymity. French lived with his parents and had the mental capacity of a teenager, his cousin Rick Shureih said in a phone interview. “He was a gentle giant,” Shureih said. “He’s never been violent in the past. He’s always been very cooperative and kept to himself.”

I find it hard to believe that the cop couldn’t run from the threat. As big as the guy is, I doubt he was a killer.

Are we talking about the same incident? I thought the guy was a 32 year old adult male. He may have had the mind of a 4 year old, but he was physically an adult.

It's a shame you think a father needs a gun (and not just brandishing it but using it ineptly and lethally) to protect his family from an unarmed handicapped man in the middle of a Costco. Sad. Scary. You've been properly conditioned for the takeover.
It honestly sounds like the same thing could be said for you

Hard to imagine but I hope video shows the full story.

I’ve always been told that you should drag the body outside the Costco before the cops arrive.
Posted on 6/18/19 at 6:56 am to sumbodyorsum1
If I'm understanding correctly, a few people in the thread are saying that even if the nonverbal guy knocked the officer unconscious while he was holding his 1 year old child, the officer should only go hand to hand with this guy because he's technically "unarmed"?

I'm going to be just as skeptical of the dead person's family's statement as I am about the police officer's attorney's statement.
Just the way it is. I really hope some kind of video comes out that can tell us the whole story.

It’s also been suggested that he should have just got up and run away.

Not suggested. That's absolutely what he should have done.
