Swapping Ball for #6 is extremely poor value

Ball’s game is flawed right now and he has an a-hole dad(that he seems to be distancing from) but he definitely has All-Star level potential. People who want to dump him (me included when he was still a Laker) are letting emotion cloud their decision mainly bc of his dad. Everyone projected at 6 is has a ceiling of good starter it appears. Trading Ball for that is definitely a downgrade (plus it gives us way too many rookies if we keep 4).
The more I think about it, I’m definitely coming around to building around all 3 of the young core (Zion, Ingram, and Ball). That has the best potential to compete for a title and that is the goal.

I think Ball can/will be good. But I worry about how he fits here. Zion and Jrue need a shooting PG and he ain’t it.
So I’d prefer to package him and 4 if necessary and get a difference maker that fits what we’re doing.
We have a driving, defensive minded guard already. We need somebody who can shoot IMO.

Ball and Jrue are the best defensive backcourt in the league.

I actually think Lonzo in New Orleans might do him some good. He needs to get away from the L.A. media so he can focus on just being a professional athlete.

I also think taking def pressure off Jrue will help his offense.

It’s not emotional. It’s the fact that he’s not a good shooter, one of the worst free throw shooters to ever play the game, and is terrible at scoring at the rim for such a big PG.
I really don’t care about his defense or fast break advantages. He’s one of the worst PGs in the league for a half court offense. Teams don’t even care about him offensively in the half court, whether that’s at the three point line or driving to the goal.
Id much rather get something from someone else that values his basketball game, b/c I do not.

Then we need Garland at #4

I’d like to give Ball a chance.

I agree. The best thing is to develop him, hope he prospers, and then trade him if they think he doesn't fit. It's a risk, but worth it.

We can get the shooting from whatever big we get to play next to Zion. That's why I like the idea of bringing Niko back.
We need somebody who can be great at catch-and-shoot from beyond the arc when Zion and Ball are driving.

Agree. I don’t mind keeping Ball if we can get a guy to hit threes and hopefully Ingram gets better there too. But we can’t have a court full of guys who need 15ft jumpers

May have to look into acquiring Bol Bol, Chuma Okeke or Naz Reid to develop as a big outsider shooter. Sign Niko and let them rotate.

And Jrue, and Ingram.....How do people not see the inherent problems here?
You have 4 starters that all basically operate in the same space, none of which defenders respect from three, all trying to exist together.
No one is scared if Jrue has the ball at the arc and runs a pick and pop because they want us to take those shots. No one is scared about getting lost on a screen because everyone can sag off and focus on the interior and ignore shots from the arc.
As good as Finch is, I do not know how you create enough interior efficiency and free throw shooting(on a roster that isn’t particularly skilled in this area either) to offset the lack of long range threats needed to beat teams on a consistent basis in a league pretty much every team is constructed to at least be able to take 25-30% of their shots from three and hit at 35% and above rates. Because unless a player like Ingram radically elevates his game, this lineup won’t be capable of that.

I don't think Jrue/Ingram have to improve THAT much for it to be not a huge issue

all of your points are valid and true.
just keep in mind...the pels are not going to be a playoff team next year regardless. Griffin has set this up to play the long game
pels will have a lottery pick next year and they will have earned it.
the market should be flush in February to add good pieces
this coming year is about two things;
-deciding what to do about Ingram
-developing zion
winning games is secondary

Oh I agree. I just think we need develop Ball too if the goal is to compete for titles in 4-5 yrs.
And I agree we will lose more than win but the games will still be really entertaining to watch

Bingo. It's a multi-year rebuild. Important to do things the right way and not get bogged down in the immediate results.

You're right about this. But you're also looking at it from a playoff standpoint. As constructed now with the various skill sets of the best players on the team, the Pels would be a one and done playoff team because they wouldn't be able to score a la Utah.
That doesn't mean these 4 pieces can't play together in the regular season and do well. We just watched a Pels team with almost no outside shooting have a great year on offense.
23rd in 3PM, 23rd in 3PA, 19th in 3P%. 8th in ORating heading into the All-Star break. It can be done. It helps to have Anthony Davis (even semi-engaged), but this staff has been scheming to offset a lack of shooting for a while.
Long term, you are right- they need to add more shooting if they want to make some real noise in the league. That's still a few years off. Maybe they think they can get Ingram and Lonzo and Zion to a place where they are good shooters in that time. Maybe they don't and they need to move a non-Zion piece. No need to get too worried about it right now

The thing about Ball is that he doesn’t get to the free throw line a lot. It’s insanely low for a player who handles the ball as much as he does. 3 things I think about when it comes to ball.
1. He gets to the line so sporadically that he is never able to build a rhythm shooting free throws. Is this the issue with his FT%?
2. He was a 67% FT shooter at UCLA. Why did he regress? Is there more to the story? Maybe the role LA boxed him in?
3 Since LA had so many iso scorers, did they relegated Ball into a entry pass PG?
Like DLo, I think Ball will flourish in a competent offensive system that will allow him to have more freedom to use his IQ and playmaking abilities to play the game the way he played it at UCLA. The confidence he’ll regain will reflect on all of his stats as he is allowed to play more freely.
