I don’t know much about Cairo. Is he another guy with potential to come into the infield and start immediately?

The book on him is he's super-slick in the field and he runs really well.

He's about the same size as Smith, though it doesn't seem like he has Smith's power. But he makes good contact.

I'm told they think Cairo will be the shortstop and Doughty will play 3rd next year.

Both of them are big signability risks for the pro teams. Cairo's dad played 17 years in the bigs; you'd figure that family has a pretty good chunk of change stashed away. And he's at Clearwater Catholic, which is a pretty well-thought-of academic school - so you'd expect college is likely a priority.

Cairo is a top 100 prospect in the draft. His dad played 17 years in the majors so money shouldn’t be an issue (don’t think he ever got a big contract though).

Doughty and Cairo would probably start at 3B/SS next year. They are huge if you don’t want to sit though another year of Hal Hughes.

ETA: got beat to it

Would be great if Garza could start out on form next year instead of his slow start this year.

I am sure you meant to say, “I hope Garza is healthy at the start of the season next year because his recuperating from injuries at the beginning of this year was a setback for the team”

You can’t fault a person for being hurt knucklehead! Just be happy he is healthy and performing even better than his high expectations were coming in!!!

I mean he wasn’t hurt in JC for the first part and had the same slow start thing going on. I get he was hurt for a bit this year but he was perfectly fine per PM long before he turned his bat around. I’m extremely happy he is performing at a high level. That’s why I’m excited about having him next year. I just struggle to believe that his entire turnaround was based purely on his health. For example, his pitch selection specifically with curveballs in the dirt was one of the things that plagued him early on. That’s more of a not used to this level of pitching thing than an injury issue IMO.

Exactly but his injury prevented him from getting the reps he needed to adjust to this level of pitching.

He started the season at DH. I fail to see how he got any less batting reps from in-game competition than he would have without the injury. Like I said, I do believe that the injury probably affected him a lot. Just based on his record though I also feel like the injury wasn’t the only reason he was struggling.

I haven't kept up with recruiting, but Hampton sounds like a boss. Hope he sticks around (or I guess decides to come around). Could be a Chad Jones /Jared Mitchell kinda dual contributer. Is he more projectable for the NFL or MLB?

Well he was already a projected 1st rounder for mlb

It’s huge for the baseball team to get talent like that and he’s basically free since he’s on football scholly. Helps big time with depth.

He’s exactly the type of player that Mitchell was. Excellent speed, great defender, I think Hampton has more power now and from the right side of the plate.

Actually he plays for Calvary Christian in Clearwater, same conference as Clearwater Central Catholic but different school. He is not big, good contact hitter, good fielder.

Edit: Replying to "Macaoidh" re: Christian Cairo.

Looks like his dad made around or just under $1 M every year for 10 years so the Money at this point won't be life changing.

I'm going to jinx it so all the borderline guys will get drafted in the early 3rd but the position players next year look stacked:

C: Garza/Travinski
1B: Beloso
2B: Dugas/Bianco
SS: Cairo
3B: Doughty
LF/RF: Hampton
CF: Gio
RF/LF: Cabrera

We need this kid he would be an LSU great and a leader as an underclassman.

Unfortunately for us ge’ll Likely get drafted and be able to use going to LSU as a major negotiating tool. The only way he doesn’t get picked today is if he told teams already that he plans on going to LSU or write x amount $ to sign and go pro.

Wish the kid the best but I really hope he ends up at LSU
