What is the purpose of buying insurance on a rental car if you have your own?

Hertz guy at the airport wanted $22 a day for rental car insurance. I was keeping the car for 8 days so that was a quick NO from me. He then goes on to explain if the vehicle suffers hail damage the claim will be processed through my insurance and asked if I wanted the rental insurance again. He got another quick No.
Why would anybody with good automobile insurance take out additional insurance on a rental car? Seems like a waste of money to me.

half the people in La don't have insurance...the other half probably don't have full coverage

My credit card company and my car insurance already provide supplemental insurance for rentals...

If you book with a credit card you may get extra coverage from them too

Because if you buy theirs, theirs is primary.
So, if you get in an at fault accident, they take the lick instead of your insurance company - and your personal rates will likely not increase.

Correct
This is the obvious answer

Peace of mind if you have OCD.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card provides primary rental coverage.

Basically to keep the accident off of your insurance.

You don’t have to as long as it’s serving as a replacement. Some people do pay it so if something happens to the rental, it doesn’t fall back on their own insurance.

This. Even with the slightest issue you'll get dropped if it happens in a rental car. Happened to me. I was not at fault, still dropped. State Farm, btw.
If you're in town where you live because your vehicle is in the shop,I can kinda see not buying the Hertz insurance.
but if you're out of town in an unfamiliar city, get the max insurances every time.
ETA: American Express/Chase/Credit card "rental insurance" is only liability for THEM, or something shady and misleading like that.... and does zero for you. They wont help at all.
Personal experience.

If you read that rental agreement, you are probably agreeing to pay for damages immediately (and lost revenue every day the car isn't rentable, possibly), not tie it up years while the insurance companies figure out subrogation and who's going to pay what.
If you total their car, are you liquid enough to make them whole right now and wait until the insurance companies figure out what they're not going to pay and then fight them to get the difference between what you paid and what insurance claims they'll pay?
There's part of your answer.
It's a moot point, though. OT ballers don't rent. We buy a new limo when we're in a strange city and just give it to the chauffeur when we're done with it.

you better double check what they are actually covering. Usually its just the physical damage of car.

I don't buy it because I use my Chase Sapphire Preferred's insurance instead, which is also primary (the Sapphire Reserve and Ink Preferred are similar). Some cards, like Citi's, offer rental insurance that specifically isn't primary insurance. Those aren't as good as Chase's cards.

I get it every time. I'm not poor and it's for peace of mind. Somebody clips me in a parking lot, no big deal. I bang it up, who cares. I just bring it back and throw the keys at the rental clerk and I'm done.

I've actually been through it. This isn't a guess
