I have two daughters, one 14 and one 5. I'd give them the world, but 40k on a wedding is utterly ridiculous. I think 70'ish a head is fair for the reception and up to 150 people. Throw in the flowers and whatnot's and I'm all in for 15k give or take. If either come to me wanting money for a 20+ crew bridal party and 300 head reception, I'd suggest to them to pony up the difference.

The family my son is marrying into is huge and they know lots of people. They will likely have 200+ invitations.

I’m scared.

Who the frick spends 40K on a wedding?

Lots of people I know. You’d be surprised at how quickly things add up. I know a few friends that spent $75,000-$100,000 on their kids weddings.

Depending where they go that’s still not cheap and the majority of the expense goes towards the reception so it’s not like you’re saving a whole lot of money there.

there is a wedding upcharge and it makes a huge difference

bands, photographers, venues, etc. all charge more for weddings

Just how much ROI does the money dance at the end provide?

Asking for a friend.

I’ve been putting away $500/mo in an investment account since my daughter was born. She’s 21 now and has almost $240k for her wedding. We plan to rent a private island for 2 weeks when she marries her long term tranny partner.

I paid every expense for my daughter's bachelors and two advanced degrees. When she wanted to get married at 23 I knew it was a bad idea. I gave her 5000 and said do whatever you want with it and she had a small wedding. 7 years later she is divorced. The next one is on her.

I've been to at least 80 weddings. Two have ended in divorce.

Maybe one or two of those 80 cost less than $20k.

To answer your question Golfy, IMO, 200+ is plenty coming from a small town.

That seems unfair.

When women start paying for their own drinks and the courts aren't completely stacked in their favor, we will visit if it's fair or not.

I'd rather have my child marrying into a large family that wants everyone in attendance than one that's cool with cutting people off a guest list.

How about just being happy with what your daughter wants rather than what you want?

And I’d rather spend responsibly and give my son and daughter cash to put towards a home.

To each their own
