So you've adopted? My wife, my son, my brother in law are adopted. Don't be so vehement.
I foster a little boy and girl right now, planning on adopting them if all goes well. I'm happy for your wife, son and brother in law. Not everybody gets so lucky.

attorney with intricate knowledge of the DCFS system in Louisiana. there are tons of kids waiting to be adopted in our system
What do you charge for representing an adopting family? About $25,000?
All that aside, we need to get these kids (the ones who want to be adopted) some exposure to prospective adoptive folks without twelve parties trying to make a buck in between.

Of course you did ?
Yeah I did, along with my sister who was four, went foster home to foster home my entire childhood. Congrats on adopting though, I truly hope it works out because anytime a kid gets out of the system it's a good thing.

I thought that making these adoptions a civic duty would lead to eventually never having a newborn child be without a family except for the brief time between birth and adoption, thereby eliminating many of the mental and emotional issues adopted children suffer.
The unadopted, currently in the system would have to be handled in a more case by case manner.
The free healthcare for life was to ease the burden of special needs children on their adoptive parents but no system is perfect.
Maybe a waiver could be made for high needs children adoption if you can make a legitimate case that you are not suitable to handle it.

You wouldn't have to make it mandatory. An income tax exemption while the child grew up would result in a massive increase in the number of families willing to foster other children. Raising a child is very expensive, and the typical foster child subsidy underwrites only about 15%-50% of it.

Let social services review income and background and place children with families as a civic duty. You are contacted by a case manager and informed that you will be made responsible for the child. A penalty is paid, if you refuse, that goes to the child. If you agree, the child receives free health care for life and you are income tax exempt until the child is 25. Only once per household.
Thoughts?

I agree. However I would want to avoid making the child a commodity. We are talking about adoption not fostering. One per family.

I come in peace on this issue. Can I ask what was the reason for multiple foster homes? Were there stints with your birth mom in between? If that's too personal, no problem. I'm just trying to learn.

i didn't say a private adoption, sir
DCFS provides attorneys for free and you actually get paid an adoption subsidy

Not facetious more like ruminative. Obviously.

It's possible this is the worst idea someone has ever come up with on the board.
OP clearly hasn't fought through the ramifications

This is a stupid thread, you should be executed for it
Posted on 5/19/19 at 8:44 am to ShortyRob
even communists like Ceausescu didn't force adoption

No offense to you but you're normally better than this. God fricking damn how many people are two fricking lazy to learn about what's going on in foster care?
Do you guys all think they arrive in foster care as infants? In fact that's exceedingly rare

The only forcing in my proposal is a penalty for not meeting your civic duty to care for a child without a family. No different than penalties for not serving jury duty.
Are you seriously trying to equate jury duty (typically 1 day) to being forced to raise someone else's kid (25 years by your own words)?
I don't support forcing people to do things against their will (use common sense to know what I mean). You want to force me to raise some kid not related to me just because I can afford it and am a decent person? Otherwise, I have to pay a fine for some a-hole that couldn't make good decisions. This is some of the dumbest shite I've ever heard.
How about we kill people that have kids they don't want or can't afford? At least the people responsible would be the ones being punished instead of innocent people.

It's no big deal, birthmom was a crackhead, was busted buying drugs with us in the car and lost us. I've never met her, at least that I can remember. And with the foster homes we got moved around for numerous reasons, spent some times in seperate group homes, it didnt help that I was a shithead until I was 16.

it's OK b/c it's not real force if you call it "civic duty"

First, if you're participating in any way in the process, period, thank you. My greater point is that it is full of legal complications. Attorneys are provided to the parents, but that doesn't mean some entity isn't paying the attorney. Are you doing it pro-Bono or do you get paid by DCFS? If you add it all up, there is a ton of money changing hands, even way after the adoption is final. That's the rub.

So my question is, what could the foster parents have done differently for you not to be a "shithead" until 16?
