I know a 14 year old girl hat was almost successful at suicide.

Someone started a rumor about her on Facebook and it derailed from there.

She just got out of a mental facility last week. Terrible what kids say and do. The internet escalates it 100 fold

My daughter had a friend that ended up hanging herself. She had many failed attempts or threatening to kill herself to the point people stopped taking her seriously. She ended up committing suicide at 15.

I’ll admit I’ve been out of high school a long time but these numbers surprise me. The non popular girls seemed to have it far worse than dorky guys because chicks can be downright vicious. I would have thought the numbers would have been reversed.

I heard this onthe radio this morning. Apparently it's being blamed on social media and how girls, being more emotional, are affected more adversely than boys when it come to negative online feedback.

Prescription meds coupled with the social media craze is absolutely the cause for this IMO.

I did a research project on suicide last year. The suicide rate is increasing among those who a diagnosed with depression and treated with meds and those who are not diagnosed and take no medicines at almost the same rate. The medicines are not the problem; social media, the smart phone, and parents that would rather watch reality tv shows, GOT, etc and drink wine instead of spending time with and talking to their kids at night is the problem.

Yeh, it’s pretty terrifying being a parent

It is by far the hardest time to be a kid growing up. They really aren’t allowed to be just kids

I am eternally grateful that I grew up before cell phones and social media. High school sucked for me because I was awkward, unathletic, and poor. I knew most of my cooler classmates were hanging out together during the summer and on weekends, but I could deal with it because it wasn’t being shoved in my face. I could just go fishing with my grandpa and not even think about it. Now though, these kids get to see EXACTLY what they aren’t being invited to. Every time they look at their phone they see a Snapchat or instagram post of all the cool kids at a party, or riding jet skis on the lake, or at the beach together. I can’t imagine how depressing that must be for these kids, especially since they really don’t have a good grasp of just how temporary and small their high school world is.

Funny, I said the same thing before I had kids and even before they turned 12-13. It’s nearly impossible to shield them from it now. You just have to monitor and set clear boundaries.

Definitely social media and the incessant bullying that occurs through that.

There’s legitimately nothing more ruthless than a bunch of teenage girls who get on social media and start rumors to harass another kid. It’s brutal.

Still thank my lucky stars that it didn’t become a thing until I was well out of high school.

It’s the all about me time and we have all been through it unfortunately today’s kids can’t escape it like previous generations. Don’t you remember when having a zit was the end of the world? Social media has just made it so bad. It’s like being cool on steroids we all wanted to be cool at that age now kids are cool based on how many followers you have or how looks you get. The pressure on girls now is worst then ever. Now if you are cool you have to show everyone on social media how you do cool things etc. in my times it was fun to be cool but that was it and if you fell into the not cool crowd it sucked but you made it through it. Either cool or not cool the pressure on these KIDS today sucks and these realtity shows, instagram, and as mentioned people putting on fake lives definitely doesn’t help. Good luck parents luckily for myself my kids are grown now,

The left has spent the last century dismantling the social structure that held us together, and most recently, has decided to push mental illness as a health lifestyle choice.

So this doesn’t seem unpredictable.

I’d be curious to see raw numbers of attempts, successful attempts, etc....

If a relatively small pool it could be a million things and an article letting people run with preconceived notions

Girls can also keep it going a lot longer as well. Small little cutting remarks for months on end. I feel like males (even today’s males) tend to resolve the conflict sooner one way or the other or lose interest in the conflict.

I’ve also read that if you introduce social media slightly older than this 10-14 range the kids are able to handle it better. So despite the snide remarks on here in regards to the poster who said their kids wouldn’t have it there does seem to be merit to that stance. At 10,11,12 kids little brains don’t need that addictive shite.
