Does anyone have an explanation for the increase in the homeless?

I’m really curious what y’all think has caused this epidemic of homeless Americans.

I live in the KC metro probably 35 miles from the core downtown. Before the “great recession” you had to go into the core city to see homeless people now they’re in the burbs working many of the major intersections. I’m baffled on what’s changed, plenty of job openings across all sectors of the economy and we have more panhandlers than before the “Great Recession”. Is this increased homelessness just a problem in KC or is it like this in every major city?

Abandoning thousands of vets with PTSD and other issues doesn't help.

That's not even a political statement. Both parties are guilty.

Aggregation (and panhandling scamming) rather than increases.

Gutting of manufacturing jobs in country, blue collar jobs, along with Easy access to opioids.
It’s more complicated than that but I know it has played a huge role.

In Portland they all speak English and are 80% white. Terrible people - I wish anyone homeless for more than a year could be humanely euthanized.

100,000 new illegal immigrants a month are hurting the poor most of all.

What you are perceiving as an increase is more likely just a change in their paradigm for how to survive

And of course as we all know homeless people only get covered by the media when Republicans are president

We've sort of killed the odd job economy, and also zoned out the whole concept of skid row type flop houses, so instead of the subset of the population that will always be sort of derelict shacking up in shanty rooms for minimal rent, they now live in tents under every overpass in basically every downtown area of the country.

The last 2 administrations gutted mental health funding both for facilities and treatment while stigmatizing therapy and outright supporting mental problems as normal.

Couple that with a massive over prescription of opiods and influx of heroin and you get the problem we have now.

I think it has sort of become a fad again, to be sort of a hippie and bum around for a while like happened back in the 60s.

Addiction. If you were to blood or urine test every homeless person you see you would probably see 80%+ with some sort of drug in their system (pot, meth, opiods, etc).
