“New” Newcastle

Terrible. What trilby-wearing hipster thought this was a good idea? Lagunitas has the rights to it thru Heineken and decided to change it.
“The new liquid is brewed with American Centennial and Chinook hops, fermented using Lagunitas’ English house ale yeast. The medium-colored brown ale is smooth, crisp slightly roasty and complete with a delicious hoppy twist. Not too sweet not too bitter.
“We are not known for malty beers,” said Jeremy Marshall, Lagunitas brew master. “We are really honored and excited to re-imagine the new Newcastle Brown Ale using our malts, hops, and yeast for a silky smooth flavorful experience.”
Doesn’t taste like Newcastle.

Good thing I can get everything I need from Louisiana breweries, at least for the time being.

Not that I ever loved newcastle.....but lagunitas brewing it is tantamount to wolfgang puck cooking Cajun.

Good luck getting an even mildly serviceable northern brown ale from any brewery in LA.

Well said. Newcastle was the first non bud colors Miller beer I ever had back in the early 90s. I still appreciate it but this shite is like a slap in the face of Samuel Newcastle.

That sounds horrible. I always would grab Newcastle if that’s all that was available, and it was perfectly serviceable
Rather than making it better than it was by brewing better and putting fuggle hops back in it...they are destroying what’s left of their brand.

Does it still give you cancer? Because that is what always made me want to drink it.

RIP Nola Brown.
Such a great beer gone before it's time.

did anybody like my use of the word "tantamount"? Esoteric like a good English bitter ain't it? Man I'm all that....

I like drinking one and remembering how large The Empire could have grown if those damn Yanks didn't get some bright ideas.

Why wouldn’t they just call it beer? The “new liquid”? Tells me all I need to know about the person making that statement.

I can respect your use of tantamount and esoteric. Well done, baw.

What we really need to brew is Newcastle that bears no resemblance to Newcastle.

Newcastle has long been a staple at our house. We hate the change. It lost that nice sweetness and just tastes like any other middling beer.
Its biggest problem had been the clear bottles letting light make it skunky. The 10-pint draught kegs that they had for a while were awesome and kept it fresh, but they went away (at least in our market). Those little kegs also made Heineken, which I had generally disliked, taste good.
Now Lagunitas is putting Newcastle in brown bottles, but the recipe itself is the fail.
I once asked a fellow from Yorkshire if he liked Newcastle, and he replied, "Aye. 'Tis mother's milk, it is!" Well, not any more. At least in this country.

I never bought six packs of Newcastle for this reason. Only bought 12s because the box was closed up. And those draught kegs were awesome.
I’m on a quest today to find some of the old 12-packs

I would suggest changing the recipe again to a brown IPA

Was my goto before craft blew up in south LA. Back When purple haze and Andy gator were the only “craft.”

I've never understood fundamentally changing a product. If you want to release something new, give it a new fricking name.

Didn't Newcastle get blasted for putting dye in their beer?

Used to buy the draught kegs for tailgates. Newcastle used to be part of my beer rotation, but no longer. I have found very good replacement brown ales.
