Do you know any people that can’t read?

I know they exist but it still seems crazy to me. I can’t imagine going through life not knowing how to read.

No, but I doubt they post here (or do they?)

My wife and I volunteered for an adult literacy program for a couple of years and it was bizarre to see adults sounding out words from children's books (though most of the material had a less childish slant). It was equally bizarre for them to quickly read words like open, closed and stop because they had learned what these "symbols" meant from daily life. Several told us that no one, even their spouse, knew they couldn't read. Though we decided many of their friends and family just went along with the charade.

Whole most can read enough to get by in daily life, there are many people who've never read a single they weren't forced to, and thus they're basically illiterate for all intents and purposes.

You want to see the current state of literacy in your area, find a FB page where the most uneducated post. It’s barely decipherable sometimes.
Worse than pidgin. They know that letters make sounds but they have no grasp how to put them together correctly so they make this patois of jargon that hurts my head to try and translate.
And text communication doesn’t help in a lot
Of cases, using the sounds of letters for words.
Lik dis. Wut u b doin 2nite. Gern out wit da girls. U shuld cum 2.

The few people I’ve come into contact with, who can’t read, are from Houma.

A friend's uncle couldn't read. He has since passed away but was born in the 30s. His family growing up were farmers and he was the baby. He had asthma as a child and his mom "babied" him and what little schooling was available she didn't let him attend. He relied on others. He could identify written days of the week. But months he couldn't. So if he had a dr app't he'd have someone put an "X" and when it came time for the appt his niece would look on her calendar and tell him what it was for. Very sad....but he made it almost 80 years that way.

You’ve quickly become one of my favorite posters.

My grandfather before he died was one of the few people I knew that couldn't read or write.
My last neighbor had 2 sons both in their 50s that couldn't read.

ack when JerMichael Finley and his wife had their first child I worked for the doc that delivered The child. He handled only dangerous births. When the contract was given to Jermichael he demanded someone come in and read the contact out loud. To this day I don’t know if he wanted to be clear, which with your child you obviously want, but he insisted the contract be read aloud word for word. He was the only client as far as I was there that demanded this.
I love drunk posting. And violating HIPAA

Your posts make me wish I couldn’t read.

Illiteracy is a bigger problem than you think. I read somewhere that 30 million Americans can't read or write above a third grade level.
