Refining doesn’t miss a beat.
In the US we don’t but gasoline. The crude that we don’t produce ourselves is bought on the open market, then shipped here for refining.
Oil price may slightly effect our margins but no one is losing their job

Wrong. Half of the students in BRCC’s ptec program have bachelors degrees and are going back to get an associates in ptec to get an operator job

You sound a little jealous of these baws Charles. That engineering degree not all you hoped it would be?
For the record: Have never/will never work in any plant

Simple.
Work very little to no overtime,= work half the year and make 80-100K
Work overtime and make 100K-150K
I'll take either one.
Oh, and the truck nuts thing is stupid and overplayed. Drive through our parking lot and you won't find a single pair of truck nuts.

You’re an elitist prick. The majority of workers in our country don’t have a college degree.
These people are the backbone of our country and work their asses off.
There are some people that grow up & don’t want to work in an office or wear a suit everyday. You’re going to talk shite about hardworking people because they’re not the “educated group”? Jeez man

I think you are confusing various groups of plant workers. Some indeed work very hard out in the plant. Then there are the operators. The old generation came straight out of high school dreaming of hiring on with Exxon, or Chevron, or another major oil company & getting a job as an operator. These guys have made a very good living by working shift work for 20-40 years because the company took good care of them. While they watched the gauges and read the newspaper and listened to the radio, they were making a good hourly wage, with great benefits. Plus their company stock experienced amazing growth (especially Exxon) which gave them wealth beyond their dreams. But with that wealth, for many, came an air of arrogance and chip on the shoulder toward the educated world. Seen it many times in the professional setting. Many of these guys(almost all males if over the age of 50) come in for professional advice and proceed to try to convice me how wise they are and show their wife how they have been a brillant provider and financial manager & how they could solve the world's problems. No formal education, just lots of exposure to media. And the arrogance is often overbearing.

Plant workers are paid well because being around that shite every day takes years off your life. I’m around it every so often
Working at or around refineries is known to increase cancer rates significantly.

I don’t give a frick how much money plant buds make.
Same shitty job, same shitty day but they get paid a lot for working a million hours a week.
frick that.
Seems like Purgatory.

I wouldn’t go that far. Several people lost their job when oil prices tanked in 2015-2016. Especially on the capital investment/project side. Same on the downstream engineering (Jacobs, Bechtel, Wood,CDI,CB&I,etc.) side. Margins had gotten so squeezed there was hiring freezes and cost cutting.

I’ve been working in the oil/gas industry for the last 9 years at many different refining/chemical companies and a majority of the people I come in contact with have college degrees and a good portion have multiple degrees. Not sure where this stigma comes from that they aren’t educated.

Right. Also, I like that if you want to purchase something (vehicle, toy, vacation money, etc) - I like that you can cover somebody on vacation relief and make OT to get a bigger check.

Two things..... If you think most jobs in operations are "shitty", you've probably don't know what our day consists of.
We are paid well for what we do, but for the most part, we don't work "a million hours a week". Many of us go months with little or no overtime. In that case, we only work half the month.

It's why they drive F250's and never have money for food.

Not entirely true. Off shore had huge layoffs, the refineries here in Sulphur/Lake Charles stayed steady.
Uh, the thread is about plant employees, not oilfield/offshore

A lotta jealousy up in here.
You do realize that other people making money is good for the community?
Most plant jobs reflect dollars coming into the community, not just dollars being shuffled around within the community.
Keep makin it baws!!

All BS aside, a tad.
While my compensation is higher, it’s mainly based upon what sacrifices and value do many really add? Granted, it’s a hate the game not the player thing.....why in the hell would anyone NOT pursue jobs like these?

Not really. My “elitist” angle takes aim at those who boast of their lottery type job and try to demean the educated sector. I do know really good people who have those jobs, but I know plenty of “baws” who create the animosity you see on this board and in public for them.
And save your “backbone”, patriotic drivel.....that backbone has a large percentage of people who couldn’t achieve anything higher. Tell ya what, backbone, quit your job and invest in an executive career path......should be easy. Right?
You throw tomatoes at me being elitist, yet you spew plenty of self-sanctimonious, “hard-working” horse shite. That, too, is elitist in its intent.
