Pontoon Boat and Engine Size

I’m looking at a 19ft pontoon boat with a 50hp 4 stroke Yamaha. Is this enough engine for the boat? I’m not looking to pull a tube or skis but also don’t want to regretting this decision even though the boat seems to be a good deal. Thanks for any input.

You ain’t going anywhere fast

If you aren't pulling tubes and you aren't loading it up with 8 people, and you are in a reservoir, it will go just fine.
You should test drive it.

My pawpaw has a 22 ft with a 60 hp 4 stroke merc. It is slow as molasses and can’t handle some of the curves in the river when the water is moving good.

Paw-in-law has a 21’ with a 90hp. Fuber won’t get out of its own way. 20 mph with a tailwind and 3 coonasses paddling like hell.

I've got a 24' with a 115hp on it(which is the max I could put legally) Pushes it about 25mph.
It really just depends what your doing with it. Most of the time, I'm only running it about 3/4 speed at best and coasting around.

And the more people and weight you add the slower it goes. It's pretty much an exponential decrease at that.
If I were to get one today it would have to be a tripletoon with at least a 150 on the back...preferably much larger.
No one ever complained of having to much motor.

I have a 20-21 ft pontoon with a Yamaha 90 4 stroke. It will run about 25 mph. I would think the one you are looking at would be quite underpowered

Depends on the gear ratio and prop and what you want to do with it. If it has a deep ratio lower unit and a light wheel (basically a purpose built pontoon engine like some manf build) it might be ok. It wont be fast but the engine wont be bogged. No matter what it isnt going to be fast. I'd want to run it.

It better have a good Bimini top because you’ll never outrun a storm. I’d pass myself.

We have an 18' with a 50HP two smoke johnson.
Won't get out of it's own way, too slow to tube behind.

We have a 24' SunTracker Fishing Barge with a 4 stroke 150.
It will run 38 mph on gps with 2 people aboard.
Add more people, it gets SLOWER.

If your pontoon boat isn't throwing a rooster tail then it's underpowered.

You need to ask yourself what you are really going to be doing with this boat.
If you're comfortable not pulling and not going fast, and I would also add, are only going to use this boat on a lake or something then you'll be fine.
If you're planning on running up and down the rivers I'd get something bigger. Some other guys posted about speed and stuff so take that for what it's worth.
I've got a 21' toon with a 90 that runs 20-22 with the family aboard. As stated, more people and it goes much slower.
I def wish I had sprung for the next size up with a 150. But then I'd be wishing for a tri-toon with a 225.
Honestly, a 19 foot with a 50 is a slow slow ride. But a nice platform to cruise and fish at a leisurely pace.
