It’s one of the biggest party schools in the country

The poster that spoke about the people looking "sick" is spot on. My wife's mother is from Bluefield, West Virginia. The only way I can describe that place when asked was "Imagine if zombies had taken over Mayberry". The people there were just not healthy looking. They did look sick. Kind of hard to explain.

I don't have much experience with West Virginia, but I think I know what you are talking about. I think it's an Appalachia thing. I've noticed the "sick looking" and "dimwitted looks" from rural, impoverished parts Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

My wife and all of her friends graduated high school and left town immediately for college somewhere else. She has stayed in touch with maybe a dozen friends and they all have weird ailments. My wife thinks is something in the water there making folks sick.

Go hit up a Black Bears game, the park is great and whether you like baseball or not it’s a blast to throw back craft brews and sliders on the party deck.

Get D’annunzios anything at Krogers or Wally World. Pepperoni rolls, pizza shells, bread. Top the aforementioned with Oliverios peppers & tomatoes.

The town is growing and a pretty fun place to live. And yes, get AWD vehicle. Hills everywhere and although this winter was mild, Motown typically gets a bunch of snow.

Stopped in after a trip to Pittsburgh two years ago. Very pretty mountain town. Felt very small, though. It was a Sunday in the summer, and we were just about the only people around. I'm sure it's busier during the school year.

That said, as multiple posters have already said - Pittsburgh is not too far, and it's very cool. Great river city in the midst of its own renaissance. Definitely visit there when you've got a chance.

Pittsburgh is probably better than any city in Louisiana. It's pretty nice. Underrated by lots of people

I visited in 2011 for the LSU-WVU game. I swear not a single building off-campus, no matter what the purpose, had been updated since 1982. Weird vibe.

A ton has changed the last 5 years or so

all the slum housing for one was torn down and new appartment buildings put up in their place. There are even more bars there now then was I was in school and all the shitty bars got new owners and all look modern and nice.

They’re hill people. Either they wanted to get away from civilization, or they’ve come to prefer it over the generations.

This was when I went and exactly how I remembered it. I felt like I went back in time 30 years...Hardly any new developments and really run down.

West Virginia people reminded me of Louisiana in a sense that they have their own thing going on and they're leery of outsiders. Unlike Louisiana, I found a lot of the stereotypes to be true, but WVU has a lot of kids from New Jersey, so it's a weird hillbilly/guido mix

All that said, while I'd never live there, that was probably the best road trip I've ever done for a football game. Had a blast drinking with the WVU fans before the game.

Ewww why would anybody rank WV on their match list?

I didn't. I didn't even enter the match this year, because I was planning on taking a gap year and do fun stuff. My advisor is from the area and she called me last friday and said that they had an unexpected opening and she put in a good word for me. A twenty minute skype interview later they were emailing me a contract.

depends on what you are looking for. Close to the bars there is a ton of places near High Street. South Park is more tame and where a ton of people working for WVU live.

I will check out South Park. I figure that I will need sleep more than I need easy access to bars during my PGY1 year.

Thanks to you and E12IC for the advice.

Cheap cost of living. Beautiful scenery. Venture out from the “big city” and you’ll meet very interesting locals.

Class V rapids on the Gauley about a half hour away, maybe less. Get a whitewater kayak and you will love it there.

Uh no.

Summerville is every bit of 2 hours away.

You ever boated the Upper? I did once, intense.
