Just saw that FMOTB is out of production and a tin is listed on ebay for $75.??

Yep, the deeming regulations put McClelland out of business because every single blend created after 2007 has to be submitted to the FDA for testing which costs a shite ton of money and takes forever.

For example if one blend has 75% Virginia's and 25% perique and another has the exact same two tobaccos but in different ratios then they must be submitted separately for testing. Heard some people say testing would cost upwards of $100k per blend.

Disturbing that bureaucrats get away with this kind of overreach.

I bought a pack of black AS cigarettes to give this perique a try.

It's a flavor I've had before, but I cant place where.

It almost reminds me of the smoke from burning tobacco barrels. There's a bite to it.

I can't for the life of me place the taste.

Was it used in any mass produced cigarettes in the last 15 years?

ETA:

It reminds me of marlboro 27s. And the only reason that suddenly stands out is because 17 year old me smoked 3 packs in one night in Mexico and puked EVERYWHERE.

Actually the martins are growers. My Uncle is Geno Martin. They sell to Mark Ryan. Most of the cigar shops I’ve been to around Br to N.O. all had loose perique and blended pipe perique for sale. And the shortage was started by families getting out of the business because of the excruciating work it requires to harvest. Every plant must be hand cut and hand hung. Can’t not use a regular tobacco harvester and hanger due to the brittleness of the perique leaves. I’ve been the one with the cane knife helping my uncles family harvest. It sucks. Lol. Harvest time is in the heat of the summer. I personally like to chew the perique out of the barrel after its fermented. A few families still bag some chew. Mostly the LEBLANC. Hope this helps you guys. Matherne supermarket also sells Ryan and daughter cigars that is a perique blend.

It’ll grow else where but when tested it isn’t even close to the potency as the grown ones from st JAMES. Also the classification of perique has everything to do with how it’s processed. They grow “faux perique” in Tennessee but it isn’t the same

More than one farm grows perique in st JAMES parish. I know them by families. Martins, Louques, Leblanc’s, Gravois, and Roussel.

Mark Ryan, the buyer of the perique makes a damn fine cigar. It isn’t all about the pipes anymore.

remembered that from early 80s when we hung a 35 - 0 on them... knew that name was something with the tobacco... I thought everyone that took LA history in middles school knew about that tobacco.

About 25 years ago, I interviewed a farmer that lived in Paulina that grew that tobacco. Said there was a huge market for it overseas.

Many of us heard of this years ago.
There was a great article in Louisiana Life about fifteen years ago or so about Mr. Martin.
