Not true. Even at its worst there were still at least a couple other farmers, but it’s definitely waaaay more than just one now.

Most of the flavor comes from the fermenting process. I won’t say ALL of it, but definitely most.

Our kids love it. It's all they'll smoke when they can get it. Makes good stocking stuffers.

Is that liquer even sold in the US? I've looked for it for years but everywhere I've asked doesn't even know what it is, much less have it in stock.
And yes, I realize that linked site ships to the US - was wondering if any local distributors carry it.

Perique Tobacco is far from the best. It's used to "cut" better more expensive tobaccos.

The American Spirit cigs in the black pack are perique tobacco. It's really strong tasting.

I like Perique when it’s cut. I smoke pipes daily and if I have any type of Perique it’s always cut.
A while back a guy I knew had a bag of straight Perique that he used to blend. I put me a bowl of it just to see what it’s like by itself. I took two puffs and almost vomited all over. It’s some strong crap by itself.

I've smoked Perique in blends for decades. one part in twenty is about right. It is used as flavoring - like you'd use Worcester sauce, or your favorite steak sauce. It also cuts the "bite" of some other tobaccos.
Not surprising that one poster mentioned that there are fake Periques out there. The last stuff I bought (at a high price) was not good - likely fake or heavily cut.
And thanks to the many posters with great comments - much more great info than I hoped for when I posted this.

All of the tobacco grown there is sold to either Mark Ryan or the Martin’s. There aren’t any independents any more. Ryan owns the Daughters & Ryan tobacco company that makes all sorts of blends and products from it. All of the Martin inventory is sold to American Spirit for their cigarettes.
I've used D&R's Virginia blend as a base for years. No preservatives, and is a about as mellow a tobacco as I can find. D&R calls their Virginia blend "Three Sails".

I have no idea where you are getting that from but when it comes to premium pipe tobacco, you are 100% wrong.
I am an avid tobacco pipe smoker and pipe collector with over 40 lbs of the best pipe tobacco available on the planet in my cellar. Virginia/Perique (VaPers) blends are among the most popular in the world. Some with as much as 25-30% perique to 70-75% Virginia leaf. I love blends with perique. They can have a peppery or figgy/raising note that adds a wonderful touch.

I used to know a guy who's uncle was a grower in St. James Parish. He said the same, that most of the unique flavor came from the handling or fermenting of the product and not any unique soil or strain of tobacco.

Drew Estates make a cigar called "Dirt" that contains some perique. Good smoke.

“Distinct Flavor”, I wonder if it’s due to being pressure packed in whiskey?
Posted on 4/23/19 at 12:00 pm to Doctor Strangelove
quote:Don't think there is any whiskey involved - except for the fact that the tobacco is fermented in old oak whiskey barrels. All the juices of the tobacco are pressed out - then the pressed tobacco is aged in the tobaccos own juices for a year or so.

That might be true but there still is a difference between the St. James red burley and the Kentucky green river burley processed which is supposedly processed and fermented the same way. I'd go with real perique over green river.
I used to blend my own VA-Perique pipe tobacco and the real perique made a difference but I was heavy handed with the Perique.
Pro-Tip - smoking a bowl of straight perique is a good cure for constipation.

I grew up in that area. It has always been known that no one smokes perique alone because it's too harsh. It is alway blended with other tobaccos as a filler

Picayune Cigarettes were made from Perique tobacco. Those little, non-filtered, smokes were some hard nails, buddy!

Try to smoke one too quickly and you'd be throwing your guts up.
