ACLU comment on Assange arrest

Ben Wizner, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, issued the following comment in response:
“Any prosecution by the United States of Mr. Assange for Wikileaks’ publishing operations would be unprecedented and unconstitutional, and would open the door to criminal investigations of other news organizations. Moreover, prosecuting a foreign publisher for violating U.S. secrecy laws would set an especially dangerous precedent for U.S. journalists, who routinely violate foreign secrecy laws to deliver information vital to the public's interest.
In response to the unsealed indictement, Wizner added: "“Criminally prosecuting a publisher for the publication of truthful information would be a first in American history, and unconstitutional. The government did not cross that Rubicon with today’s indictment, but the worst case scenario cannot yet be ruled out. We have no assurance that these are the only charges the government plans to bring against Mr. Assange. Further, while there is no First Amendment right to crack a government password, this indictment characterizes as ‘part of’ a criminal conspiracy the routine and protected activities journalists often engage in as part of their daily jobs, such as encouraging a source to provide more information. Given President Trump’s and his administration’s well-documented attacks on the freedom of the press, such characterizations are especially worrisome.”

I remember when the ACLU was pissed that Trump said "America" 80 times during his 2018 SOTU speech

Days like these always expose those who care about liberty vs those who only care about their political sports team, thank you for outing yourself as one of the latter

Do you seriously not understand that comment?
Posted on 4/11/19 at 3:25 pm to Draconian Sanctions
This sounds like the old ACLU. Not the new race baiting ACLU.

Wait, I thought Trump was in cahoots with Wikileaks and the Russians to steal the election from Hillary. Should we not be arresting this major player in the colloosion narrative?

As an attorney I use to have a level of respect for the ACLU and what they stood for. Once they began making exceptions to their advocacy for free speech I lost that respect. They have been hijacked by social marxist just like the democrat party.

Did you just wake up from a 2.5 year bender? Seriously, where have you been since Nov 2016? That’s the Russian collusion nonsense in a nutshell. And in case you haven’t figured it out, the ACLU is not exactly a Trump cheerleader.
