Let’s have a WWI discussion. Which country is most at fault for it?

Germany is usually everybody’s #1 country to place the blame.
What about Austria-Hungary?
Russia?
Serbia?
France?
Britain?
Discuss
Eta: I think there is blame enough to go around but I don’t think Russia and Britain get enough blame a lot of the time.

Whatever country Trump’s ancestors were living in...that country is to blame.

If Britain would have stayed out, a lot of innocent men wouldn’t have died for nothing

quote:Because it is the #1 country to blame. The Kaiser felt looked down upon by his cousins in the English and Russian royal families, Germany was an upstart empire that saw an opening in Europe to rack up points and shot their shot. The fact that the Schlieffen Plan existed long before is proof. And then they chose to be the country to violate Belgium's sovereignty.

I don't think you can blame just one country. It was just a perfect storm of awful from a few different areas that fueled it.

Serbia and Austria Hungary for lighting the fuse
Germany and Russia for the amount of dead. They shouldnt have invaded Belgium and shouldnt have went after France. Germany having little dick syndrome and moving west is the problem. Russia shouldnt have rushed to help Serbia. The world should have let Austria Hungary and Serbia Duke it out.

I'd argue it was ethnonationalism and the alliance system that was to blame.

If World War One was a bar fight
I've always enjoyed that story.
But seriously, Germany and Austria were itching for a fight. The upstarts wanted to become major world (colonial) powers like their neighbors.
Dan Carlin's hardcore history podcast on WWI goes into it in pretty good detail.
Also, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is kind of a hilarious story. Earlier that day, they someone else tried and failed to assassinate him. If at first you don't succeed...

France and Russia both were too.

Belgium. If they had just let Germany through then Britain wouldn’t have declared war and Germany would have knocked France out before Russia could mobilize, and the whole war might have taken a few months with minimal carnage and destruction and simply resulted in some territory changing hands

And was the primary cause of all the strife/discord which fueled WW2

You can come up with incidents or policies here and there to debate otherwise in who started the WWs. But in the end it always comes back to the Huns.
They started ‘em. Uncle Sam finished ‘em.
