Quartzite is awesome. I caught one of my kids raking a pair of pliers across it the other day and to my surprise, there wasn’t even a faint scratch.

Is it quartz or quartzite? Because quartz will scratch easier though it if pretty durable.

I have granite in the kitchen and quartz in the bathrooms. Let me dispel some of the bullshite going on in this thread.

1. Sealing granite is quick and easy.
2. It does not have to be done every year if you buy a decent product and not the cheap bullshite.
3. Quartz will not only stain but it also gets dull looking.
4. Quartz is not any harder to damage that granite. Both will scratch and crack.
5. Granite is easier to keep clean and looking good.

I like the quartz tops but if I had it to do over again I probably would go all granite.

All of that is entirely opinion and/or false, but i'd bet you $10k that I could crack/break a slab of granite easier than a slab or quartz. There is a reason granite requires brackets on island overhangs and Quartz doesnt.

They're both great ctops. Granite is harder and doesnt 'burn', Quartz doesnt require sealing. Both can be had from $40/sf to $85+.

I put OSB on my countertops

Yeah we get splinters in our food daily, but we like the natural look of wood that has been processed a bit to look more modern

Yep is much heavier and doesn’t flex like quartz so it is more likely to crack. You can carry a piece of quartz flat and as soon as you lifted the same length of granite flat it would immediately snap in half. It’s the weight and being a more rigid material

Just got quartzite installed. Love it. We had the surface “leathered” so it has a little texture to it.

How do you like the leathered texture? About to put this in our kitchen.

Don’t forget marble

Marble etches if you get lemon or lime juice on it. It can be buffed out but it requires work.

Yep and it scratches and chips easier though not all marbles are created equal. Carrara, the white marble with gray veining that most people are familiar with and is a popular look is really soft. I always tell my customers if you have a very active kitchen/are a messy cook/ aren’t the most meticulous at quickly cleaning up spills and messes it isn’t the material for you. It’s one of the reason the composite quartz products are so popular . You cans get a similar look with little upkeep and maintenance. Other types of marble or much harder and less prone to etching, staining, chipping.

We ended up with quartzite. Look of Marble with the properties of granite.

Glad I did it and worth the few extra $. Prefer a matte finish and was never a fan of the glossy finish of most granites.

for the folks knocking quartz saying it looks like crap and will go out of style, quartz has come a long way in the past 10-15 years. You can now get quartz that looks exactly like marble and granite. Plus it isn't porous, doesn't stain, and is harder so less likely to chip. This is also why quartz now costs more than granite and marble.

IT doesn’t cost more than marble and granite necessarily . THere are slabs of quartz that are cheap just like entry level slabs of granite and marble that are cheap. The difference is you have ultra exotic slabs of granite, marble and quartzite that are five thousand and more wholesale. You don’t have quartz slabs at that price.

Lol no. Every slab of “marble like” quartz we saw at Triton or Select Stone had a clear difference to marble or quartzite.
