Thanks everyone for the input! Good information.

I was expecting it to be the other way around, 19 toxic posts and 3 helpful ones.

quartz doesnt stain and never needs sealing, granite stains and needs to be resealed each year.

plus there is a much larger variety of patterns and colors with quartz since its manufactured/recycled glass

I put butcher block in my last house. Hand made with 1 inch red and white oak strips. It was incredible. Sealed it with a butcher block wax i got from home depot instead of a polyurethane so it kept a matte look instead of a glossy look. It required a decent amount of maintenance. Did my entire kitchen for like 1900.

We are currently redoing our kitchen in our new house. Decided to only do our island in butcher block and went with a slab and not cut pieces. Went with quartz on the outer countertops. Quartz is a bit more expensive (75-97 sq ft for nicer stone), but we hope to be done after this.

Shines great
Looks like new

Butcher block is a germ haven cause its porous

Are people under the impression that sealing granite is an expensive or labor intensive project?

Quartz will scratch easier and is not as heat resistant. Also if you receive lots of direct sunlight it can fade over time. One advantage of quartz is you can get the gray and white marble look that is so popular now without the durability issues of marble. You can not get that same look with granite. Quart does not have the surface depth of granite and to me has a somewhat artificial look compared to a natural stone.

We just re-did our bathrooms and went with Corian in all of them except the master. Did quartz in the master. The Corian looks like quartz/granite from a distance, and was a lot cheaper.

About to start kitchen reno. We're doing quartz. Thought about butcher block for the island, but wife didn't really like the contrasting look in the sketches our designer made.

Contractor buddy of mine got me quartz for a discounted price. I love it. I’ve never had granite so can’t speak to it.

Need to do mine too. Roughly 60-70 sq ft of counters excluding the back splash

Ok. So I have dark quartzite on countertops and island. That shite is almost indestructible. It’s some kind of ground up granite glued together to look like granite.

Want to go lighter - after reading all this to get the ‘natural’ look with veins etc. Looks like granite or quartz.

I have white quartz in the kitchen. Granite in the bathrooms. I like the look of the quartz more.
