Love the song. I'm partial to Europe '72 like many but interested to listen to other versions in this thread.

Cheers!

but if I'm listening to the dead it's before '79 I can tell you that.

But probably have no problem listening to Panic post-2000.

There are three versions that stand out among the rest for me.

1. The version off of View From the Vault IV at the Oakland Coliseum in the summer of 1987 even though Jerry flubs the words on the first or second line he sings.

2. The version off of Go to Nassau. I want to say either May 15 or 16 of 1981, maybe 1980.

3. 12-19-77 at Winterland (Dick's Picks Volume 10)

i cant remeber the year but i stumbled across a show inthe early 80's where jack straw came back from a 5 year break. listening to the crowd go nuts when they started was amazing.

I got into a discussion with a good friend of mine that made the statement... "Jack Straw is the perfect song ever written/played".

We were out drinking listening to music and discussed ad nausea and I must say that I understood what he was trying to say. I'm not sure I agreed, but he made a good case for it.

I don't know his argument, but he may be correct. Song has it all, slow jams, vocal trade offs, two jams minimum.

Plus, it's one of the few songs I can sing start to finish in the shower without the song actually being on.

A great performance of Jack Straw by the Grateful Dead definitely qualifies as a perfect song.

“Go back and take another listen homey:

Fall Tour 85
MSG Fall '87
Hampton Spring 88
Anything from 89
Spring Tour 90
Boston 91”

Lucky to say I was at almost all these shows...I’m a little surprised that 4/6/87 didn’t get a shoutout. Amazing version that slides into a nice deal to end set one. The JS jam is fantabulous.

As a fan that became a novice level Deadhead only earlier this year do to CV-19 I can say that Jack Straw is one of my favorite songs. The different "favorite versions" listed here are exactly why I think they are so great. Same song, different version and I have simply never got tired of listening to them constantly after almost 5 months.

As a guitar player:
I am now playing many of the ones I like best: I can play Deal, Althea, Bertha, Trucking but Jack Straw has been almost impossible for me to play as the chord/shapes are crazy.

Props to Jerry for his various Mixolydian lead scales. Incredible technique.

What Jerry starts doing at the 3:40 mark goes down as utterly amazing. While the recording itself isn't the best I am not sure the playing isn't.

Jack Straw 01-11-79

ETA - I see this 1/11/79 show was posted on the 2nd reply!! Oh well enjoy.
