I feel badly for the people who were in the air when some of the other countries shut down their airspaces to the 737 MAX--they had to divert

Did they though? I thought Canada had closed its airspace to maxes, but flightaware shows a few Westjet flights in the air. There is one en route to Toronto from Costa Rica that was still down in central America.

I was referring to reports yesterday that flights were being diverted due to closing of airspace to 737 MAX in European and far-eastern countries.

Gotcha...
That said, this Westjet just left Puerto Vallarta an hour ago:

PVR - YYZ

Maybe they're being allowed to fly back so they're grounded domestically (Canada) instead of being stuck in Mexico?

Canada is allowing repositioning flights.

So if pilots have been reporting issues with a downward pitch when engaging autopilot, why have they not taken action?

It's my understanding that they were rewriting software that they were going to push out to the fleet in April. Boeing rolled the dice on not asking for the fleet to be grounded until then and hoping that another crash wouldn't happen. It came up snake eyes.

Under the FAA grounding, Boeing gets an enormous economic reprieve. The emergency order allows for production test flights to continue with a special flight permit. The company continues to build 737 Max aircraft at a record pace, accounting for most of its 52/mo Renton output.

From American Airlines:
quote:

On average, American operates 85 flights per day on the MAX 8, out of 6,700 departures throughout the American Airlines system.

The safety and security of our team members and our customers remains our top priority. We continue to have the utmost confidence in our fleet, which is flown by our highly-trained pilots and maintained by our highly-skilled maintenance team.

American regularly monitors aircraft performance and safety parameters across our entire fleet, including extensive flight data collection. This data, along with our analysis, gives us confidence in the safe operation of all of our aircraft, and contributes to American’s exemplary safety record. American has flown more than 2.5 million passengers — during 46,400 operating hours encompassing nearly 18,000 flights — safely on our MAX 8 fleet since the first one was delivered Sept. 2017 and began commercial service later that November.
I am sure the airlines are fed up with the hysteria and anger directed their way with all of this.

2. Southwest is already preemptively adding new angle of attack indicators to its 737 MAX fleet, which is fixing the suspected issue in the Lion Air crash (adding redundancy in case of AoA sensor failure) and which has been speculated to be involved in the latest ET302 crash.

I wish you'd lay off this a little bit. They aren't doing anything "preemptively". You are insinuating that SW has installed a 3rd AOA probe when all they've done is written a check to unlock the AOA display dial on the PFD. Or, as is written in the article, finally gotten around to doing something that AA has been doing since they received 737 # 1.
