My Labrador blew out her knee

Blew out her knee ligaments, now needs a LSU surgeon to repair for $2400.
Anyone have similar experiences???

Can it still hunt? If not, two gut shots..or does it appear to bother the lab? Then do nothing..Or if it limps then place on NSAIDS or look at surgery

They make braces for dogs with ACL injuries.

Close friend on mine is a veterinary surgeon and apparently a damn good one. It’s all he does.
He replaces hips and knees regularly as well as back surgery.
He tells me all kinds of stories where a vet tells people that they can do whatever surgery only to completely screw it up and then they have to come to him to either fix it or put the animal down.

Just know that dogs that tear 1 ACL are more likely to tear the other.
If I recall it’s about 6 weeks of strict rest. Somehow my GSP hasn’t torn his, but my BIL’s 2 labs both tore one about a week apart.

We had this happen to a older dog. Skipped surgery. 2 week he wouldn't put any weight on it. 2-4 weeks he started limping on it with a little weight. After maybe 2-3 months was walking around again almost normal. This was an older inactive dog so your situation might be different. He could never jump on the bed again after that.

Just did the back leg on my lab. Was over 3k at medvet.
They did the one where they cut the bone and move it out with plates to cradle the knee.
He's just getting back to normal after about 10 weeks. The first few weeks suck having to walk the dog on a leash and sling.

My Heeler severed her calcaneous (achilles) tendon when she was 8 months. We lived in an apartment with a spiral metal staircase, and the bottom lip of each step was uncovered. Well she got to trying to round up some kittens we were fostering at the time, and slipped on the stairs.
She cut it cleanly, and she only yelped once, brave pup. Thought we were gonna have to put her down, but the LSU vet that night begged us to try to find another solution and refused to to give her the shot. We were lucky I got approved for a CareCredit line that would cover her surgery and aftercare--about 2400.
Sherwood Animal Hospital had a canine orthopedic specialist who fixed her up. Had a few difficulties (bc she's a Heeler) but the doc said her results were some of the best he'd seen with that injury. It still swells and pains her periodically, but not in a way that degrades her quality of life. She's 6 now, still doing well.
She cut it cleanly, and she only yelped once, brave pup. Thought we were gonna have to put her down, but the LSU vet that night begged us to try to find another solution and refused to to give her the shot. My first lab that I ever had to train, and my best dog that I will ever have- in both hunting and friendship- had ACL surgery after tearing it training.
He was a freak of nature with his drive and it was almost inevitable it'd happen. I was in college and had to sell guns, boats-you name it- in order to pay for it. On top of that, I was younger and dumber and didn't take heed to the vet's orders and cautions on keeping the dog down until the vet cleared him.
I let mine off leash ONE time to just walk a little because I felt bad for the ol baw having to stay immobilized 24-7.
When I did that, he tore his other ACL. In 5 minutes of limping around the yard he got too ballsy and boom, man down.
Between those 2 surgeries and his pride being hurt from losing his mobility, he never was the same dog again, regarding his confidence. (He was still the best gd'mned dog that ever graced the dirt in dixie though.)
Whatever you do, if you get surgery on the pup, do not let him get too active and stick to the vet's orders. Don't do like I did.

Yes. Lab before the one I have now tore her ACL. Took her to A&M and they did TPLO surgery. Had to keep her crated for about 5-6 weeks. Was the worst part. Always on a short leash out of crate. Repair held up very well. Had some arthritis later in life in that leg. Seems like it cost around $2000 back in 2006.

My dog torn up her knee too. Vet said I can spend 3 grand for surgery but it is not guaranteed or I can make sure she does not run again and it may heal on it’s own. Well 1 year later of letting her heal on her own, she is just about back to 100 percent.

my bloodhound had double knee surgery, it was awful for her
success has a lot to do with the size, weight and age of the dog
it would up buying her an extra year
I’d do it again but it was not a good investment

Yes.
Your lab may have a more severe injury than mine though.
Mine messed up back knee ligament and my vet told me unless I was planning on it being a competition dog then he would not recommend surgery.
5 years later and dog is fine and never shows any discomfort with the knee.

I went through this several years ago. 100 pound or so male.
Freak accident while playing in a creek.
Get it Done ASAP.
Ours was his rear left. Had to basically hold his butt up for a few days while he peed.
It took a few months to get over it. Only holdover was he usually squatted when he peed from then on:)
