This is a Movie/TV Board that contains more than a few hard core film buffs, myself included. Some of us even work in the film industry. To use this place as a microcosm of the general movie-going public is intellectual dishonesty.

But it does indicate butts in seats and whether or not people have actually watched these movies that have been nominated. In 1997, three of the five films nominated for Best Picture were box office smashes that earned well over $100 million. When you adjust them for inflation, As Good as it Gets and Good Will Hunting both would have earned close to $300 million in today's dollars.

And then you have a film like Titanic that would have grossed more than $1 billion in 2018-19 dollars. Even L.A. Confidential, adjusted for inflation, would have earned over $100 million at the domestic box office. The only film nominated that year that wasn't seen by a good many of the general audience was The Full Monty.

And that's the point I'm trying to make. Even when there were just five nominees for Best Picture, there was a time in which popular mainstream films made up a majority of the nominees. They didn't always win Best Picture, but they still ended up making the final five.

I see a decent amount of movies in theaters and rarely have any problems. It also depends what movie you’re going to see on a Saturday night. If you’re seeing Spider-Man at 730 on a Saturday I’m sure the likelihood of having annoying kids is higher. Any pg13 blockbuster type movies I try to avoid seeing on Friday or Saturday night.

It's not just BR - it's everywhere. Over the last 5-10 years, basically since everyone bought an iPhone, theaters are terrible! In the past, it was an occasional crying baby, talking, etc. Now it seems like to 20% or more of the viewers - that the movie on the screen is secondary to whatever else they have going on. Speilberg, Tarrantino, etc have probably not set foot in an average movie theater with average movie goers in the last decade. I'm sure they watch with other industry people ( those people would not dare conduct personal business with SP or QT there ) in private theater settings or premieres at red carpet events that average movie goers cannot attend.

Made for tv movies weren't considered either. Streaming should be placed in same class

Jesus. He’s not saying that we should do away with Netflix. He’s saying that the awards for theatrical release films should stay about theatrical release films.

okay? still, i never had that opportunity to see it in theaters and it still moved me.. i couldn't stop thinking about it after i saw it.

i think SS is wrong here. a movie is a movie, regardless where it was released..

i also disagree about wanting to go to the movies to be apart of the crowd. i'd want to go to a theater for the huge screen and loud sound.. but not because i want to be with a ton of strangers where i have to be sure i don't upset anyone.

i have my own projector screen at home any ways, so these amazon and netflix originals look fine to me if i want a somewhat bigger viewing experience.
