This is the same thing that the movie industry was against 35 years ago.

No. It's not.

They wanted people to spend $100 for a vhs or beta tape instead of being able to rent it for the night from a rental store.

No one is saying that Netflix and Amazon should be illegal.

I don't know what you are talking about b/c the theaters in Dallas have gotten significantly better over the last 10 years.

Recliner seats, better food options, reserved seating...

Didn't Casey Affleck win for an Amazon movie?

Forgive my ignorance either way.

I first experienced that in Austin in 1997. No doubt, it's great. That was the first time that I'd ever drank a beer at a movie. But the average theater experience across the country is nothing like that. And it's only taken another 20 years for some Louisiana theaters to start serving alcohol.

Amazon produced it, but it had a wide release in theaters long before it was available to watch on prime

Yes. Amazon waited three months after it was in theaters to stream it. They ran a full run in the theaters, even after it was up and streaming.

Amazon makes deals with distributors like Lionsgate, where the film does a full theatrical run and eventually streams on Amazon. Big Sick was another Amazon film that did a full theater run. But Amazon is also looking into buying Mark Cuban's theater chain, so they might be looking at switching their strategy.

I don't think the Speilbergs and Nolans are upset with companies funding theatrical releases with the purpose of having exclusive streaming. It's the stealth premieres in L.A. and New York and the extremely limited releases that get them. I'm sure Netflix refusing to give out numbers on their theater ticket sales doesn't help.
