Funny thing about #3 was that he was hated early on. Became beloved as an older man
I went to a mid 80s race at Talladegga. He was Booed constantly and literally just a few #3 shirts worn. It was Elliot or Allison or Waltrip that was liked. What a transformation ....

Hated him as an Allison fan growing up. Was only after he died that I realized how much he mattered.

I liked Ricky Rudd for some reason as a kid. Best driver name was Dick Trickle though

Watched the race with some friends in Hammond. After we hit the Waffle House for eats and I headed home. Heard he passed on on the drive back to Metairie on the Elevated before Manchac.
My parents both worked at his Chevy dealership in N.C. before they ritiered. Got a pic with him the day after he raced the Coca-Cola 600 autographed, as well as print copy from Chevy ads and a Sam Bass all autographed.

I honestly didn’t think it was that bad either when I saw it
Me either. Then DW said, "I hope Dale's ok." I didn't even think about it till then.

Where were you when the world stopped turning?

He was very aggressive on the track some would say borderline dirty. Died while blocking the track for his son to have a chance to win. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

I grew up in Hueytown and knew the Allison’s well. I was in Daytona the day Earnhardt died. Ken Schrader said “He’s gone” when he walked back to the garage. Red Farmer was my crew chief for a few years after Davey died in a few Arca races and when I drove for MedPartners in Busch Grand National in 97.

It is a lot like pro wrestling. Until the 90's no one cheered for the bad guys. Also like pro wrestling the outcomes are predetermined.

They called it stock car racing when I started watching as a kid in the 70's. Still remember Earnhardt Sr. being the upstart kid in the late 70's when Richard Petty and David Pearson were going toe to toe. They played for keeps back then. Vague memory of Cale Yarborough slugging it out toe to toe on the track with someone. It was like WWF and racing combined back then.

Not a NASCAR fan.
Went fishing that day.
Did OK.
Came back & eventually watched SportsCenter that evening.
Was sad about it from a human standpoint.

The Allison Bros., I think. Some folks say that broadcast put 'stock car racing' in the public eye.

Oddly enough, that is the only NASCAR race I've ever watched beginning to end. A friend was having a watch party, and I went for the hell of it. Left as soon it was over, assuming he'd be fine. I was shocked to later hear the news.

That’s interesting Do you have any more behind the scenes stuff you can share? Not just related to Earnhardt.

Watching the race with my FIL. He knew right away he was dead. So did Waltrip. First thing he told Michael after winning.

Camping out on the infield was wilder than Mardi Gras. Younger me enjoyed the boobs even if they were trashy as hell
My boss goes to Talladega every year and he tell us stories about what goes down over there. A bunch of us (even the non NASCAR fans) are trying to convince him to have a team bonding event there lol
